That distinction has never been set in stone, and the admiralty formally announced that both names were valid in 1902.

YMMV etc, but that’s not how we were taught / indoctrinated.
The journalist lost the smug argument in my eyes.

(ETA journalists are generally speaking due a keel haul for their semantics and sensationalism. )

What a muppet! I've decided I cannot vote Tory whilst the current ministers are in charge (Boris, Hancock, Patel to name three). I was rather hoping that there was a lot of back bench Tory talent waiting in the wings to replace the current lot. Well, if James Wild is typical of the quality of, let's say, junior Tories, then things are even worse than I thought.

Why both?

The MP comes across as a bit of a smug dick. The BBC guy was just trying to answer his smug questions.

On a wider note are we really that insecure as a Country that we need to see flags on various publications/documents?

What the hell is it with flags at the moment?

It seems to have become a measure of Britishness among the Tories to display a flag at any given opportunity. There’s even been Zoom interviews from their homes with a flag in the background.

Who the hell displays a Union Flag in their living room or study?

Exactly, I received my council tax bill and there wasn't one Union Flag on it!
Who do I complain to?

The thing is I actually LIKE the Union Flag and seeing it displayed but it's a bit like the Poppy to me. i.e. when people somehow make a point of being "considerably more patriotic than yow" it becomes counter productive?

I take pride in the fact that my Britishness and my Englishness dont involve worrying about flying flags or celebrating St Georges day or thinking that I'm better than anyone that happened to be born in another country. That's a great thing about being British. Just shrug your shoulders at other people's exaggerated patriotism and say "We're better than that".

It's a good thing we've not got more important things to worry about.

There’s always the association with some pretty vile elements as well which I struggle with, but this rise in nationalism is to be expected at the moment. Two people on my lane have flagpoles on their lawns and wonder what they get out of it.

Did anyone see the fuss in the Mail and Express when Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty dared to poke a little mild fun at Jenrick about the size of his flag?

The joke about the flag alone was fine but what was bizarre was that Munchetty also sniggered because he had a picture of the queen. One assumes that during lockdown he has been using that room set-up for more important ministerial conference calls, not just talking to breakfast journalists. It seemed perfectly normal for a minister have that portrait on display.

Fetishisation of national symbols like the flag and the queen are a sign of how far this country has fallen in my view. I like the flag but it doesn't have to be everywhere and politicians complaining that people aren't displaying it all times sees us heading in the direction that the US has gone down with those ridiculous lapel pins and making kids stand up and chant the pledge of allegiance every day.

Notwithstanding my previous comment and my love for the BBC, I do recognize that ministers are going to want to do on-line meetings with some sort of background that shows they aren't in a cupboard. For that reason I don't have problem with flags and photos that add to the atmosphere. A nice Turner painting and a picture of something built by Brunel would be my choice. Plus a model of an E-type Jag.
