New £50 Bank note - Alan Turing.
Discussion
Haven't seen a thread running... so here is one.
"He was also gay, and was treated appallingly as a result. By placing him on our new polymer £50 banknote, we are celebrating his achievements, and the values he symbolises."
"The Bank is flying the rainbow flag above its Threadneedle Street building in London as a result."
I think he is a great candidate for being on the bank note.
... But.....You can't please all of the people all of the time....
However, campaigners are still questioning how much the Bank's collection of banknotes represents society. Three feature men - Winston Churchill on the £5 note, JMW Turner on the £20 note, and soon Alan Turing on the £50 note. Only the £10 note, with the portrait of Jane Austen, depicts a women apart from the Queen, and all are white.
We only have 4 banknotes.
Is it possible to have society fully represented with historic British legends with just 4 different notes?

Who has the time to worry about this? We only have 4 banknotes.

And who really cares. It's money. You spend it and get stuff. End of story.

Honestly I would cut my own throat if this was ever a worry of mine.
Campaigners, get a f
king lifers more like.
Every time a banknote is released there's complaints. Campaigners, get a f
king lifers more like. It reminds me when the Elizabeth Fry note was taken out of circulation and someone complained there's no longer any women on the banknotes. The response was "yes, there is. There's a female on EVERY banknote!"

I honestly can't remember the last time I handled cash.
This morning. I recall a couple of years back when the card system crashed and all the “I will never use cash again”proponents wet themselves as they couldn’t buy a skinny latte at their local Starbucks. I still savour that moment watching them going into free fall. Deep joylode.

Odds of my having a £50 note in my hand to look are low in any event......... But either way I am happy to see a person who was a hero to our Nation celebrated on a note.
Agreed. There’s viable conjecture that his work foreshortened the war by a couple of years with the resultant saving of lives and yet society treated him very poorly. Glad he’s getting recognition now. Not being confrontational (or racist for that matter) but name me a BAME who has made a historical contribution to this country? Someone who can compete with the Queen, or someone who helped win the war?! None that I can think of. There will be in time I am sure, but we need another generation or two before this even becomes a conversation. Turing has a deserved place.
