English independence referendum?
Discussion
It is a very interesting thought. I wonder how many who consider themselves strongly pro union would, on honest reflection, discover they were in fact strongly pro England and would happily leave the Union if they could do so broadly on their terms and to the betterment of their country? Or does pro Union mean just that, a till death us do part, for better or for worse marriage of inconvenience that must be sat out till its bitter never end?
Before any referendum on English independence could be considered, England would first need to form its own government which currently, it doesn't have.
Now, if Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all voted for independence and got it, then what we have in Westminster would become the de-facto English Parliament but we would have to wait for that happen. Which it won't.
The complexity and cost of establishing an English parliament would be unfathomable. The time it would take would be long (see Brexit for further information) and all this is just to enable a referendum that is most likely to say no anyway.
If, given everything else that is happening in the world, all that occupies your mind is some rose-tinted notion of English Independence, then you are very fortunate indeed.
But as an idea, it's a complete non-starter.

I agree, but it an intersting can to kick about!! Now, if Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all voted for independence and got it, then what we have in Westminster would become the de-facto English Parliament but we would have to wait for that happen. Which it won't.

No its a stupid idea, as is any referendum by any part of the United Kingdom for independence.
For Scotland, Wales or NI independence will mean a massive economic downturn that will take decades to recover from. People will be poorer, public services will suffer and jobs will be lost.
For England to basically tell the others to get stuffed is just selfish stupidity that will lead to resentment, conflict and further division in this country. How would you possibly justify it? Well you are poorer than us so f
k you?
This a great country combined, wealthy, diverse and a world leader in many areas, that punches well above its weight, to weaken or dilute this is almost criminal.
