We all know about the global chip shortage and how its affecting vehicle production.

I'm hearing building materials are in short supply, Travis perkins can't source tiles or roofing batons I'm told.

I work in oil and there's been a lack of investment since the 2014 downturn, If my small corner of the globe is indicative of everywhere else, then I suspect when the current reserves are drained, demand will be hard to fill.

Anyone else's industry affected?

I was trying to buy some camping stuff, looked at several websites. Sleeping bags tents roof rack. Out of stock was the general vibe. Made enquires, covid suez, shipping containers short supply, Chinese factory closures all reasons I found. Prices are going to go up, already have in garden furniture which I am needing to buy soon

I buy boxes of cat food on Amazon.

The order is on hold just now because of supply issues due to Brexit.

Hopefully they’ll get it sorted soon but tbh it’s probably just as cheap now buying it from a supermarket.

Plastic polymers have been affected:

The growing global demand plus shortage of available shipping containers are affecting lots of material supply.

I was in wilko the other day and the shelves were empty. I was told supply issues when I asked.

A few good videos on YouTube explaining global supply issues and container shortages as well.

Motor trade here, as well as production delays, spec of some cars and vans is being reduced, some manufacturers are actually not taking orders for vans at all with production halting completely to concentrate on the more profitable and higher sales of cars.

This then has a knock on effect on prices of used cars which has shot up, supply has decreased used vans even more so, everyone is struggling to replace used stock at similar price levels, to the point where we are going to have to bite the bullet and pay circa £2k more for something in the usual £10k - £11k retail bracket, our usual used van go to is selling vans for £5k over book.

I think it's going to be like this for many many months.

If you are in sourcing or supply chain management of any kind at all, it’s been known about for a while. The microchip thing has been causing me grief for about 2 months now, inc having to organise and plan qualification campaigns for lesser quality chips. Long lead item times that previously were 20-26 weeks are now being quoted as 52weeks. Air shipment rates for your delivered products are going up as so many are transferring from sea shipment. Sea shipment stuff is just buggered atm.

In the more mundane world, getting hold of concrete is getting more difficult and the price is soaring. Same is true for certain types of wood used in construction.

Stuff from China, or long distance. I can understand.

But why is wood and cat food buggerd?

Is this the start of a proper economic meltdown?

I work in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Many of our raw materials from overseas are impacted to some extent either by Brexit for items from Europe or significant port delays for materials coming from Asia. Covid and Brexit the main causes.

Finding similar issues getting product out. Our hauliers expected issues shipping to Europe, but the scale of it surprised everybody. Covid queues into France compounded with many people dealing with new customs procedures created a vehicle shortage.

We end up flying a lot of product at vastly increased cost.

Wood is impacted by an increase in demand and covid delays.

Electronic chips for the car industry are being slowed due to the Chinese wanting these for their own car production! No slow-down in production at all at VW china, Merc china, PoleStar and other chinese production sites!!!!
and why oh why are we sending wood from the Black Forest to China and the USA to make cheepo furniture to send back here???? One great example is the so-called "british" (registered, yes but selling chinee junk) firm Cotswold, and Oak Furniture... "chinese" oak from, possibly, the Black Forest... all cheepo chinese...... It should be made here and not by concentration camp slave Uighurs!!!

We’ve been given warnings on shortages of paint - particularly whites / white bases.
Lack of titanium dioxide to go in it, and also plastic for packaging.
Already had a 3% price increase this month with more to follow.

Even now, there’s some paint we can’t get.

Total thread diversion but we may see some manufacturers moving away from China on ethical grounds. Those that can afford to anyway.

Concrete in short supply. It was noticed a couple of weeks ago - the quick drying stuff we use comes from Germany, though not sure about raw materials. Big wholesalers notice and then stock up, worsening the supply

As the shared carer of a number of cats over the years, I often wondered why Mrs Moneypenney would spend our hard earned on cat food that was often refused or only part eaten (due to them having first gorged themselves on the local rodent population all night (and sometimes dragging in the spoils of their efforts to prove it!)).

Is cat food an unnecessary purchase (or at best, a weekly treat on a Sunday)? If so, how many other things do we consume without any thought that are either wholly unnecessary or at best, unnecessary at the current scale and frequency?

If stuff has to be prioritised for those scarce chips or containers to move stuff, what should we ditch first?

There’s a 14 week wait on my new couch due to a global foam shortage, or at least I’m told.
