I hate this kind of story that conflate trivialities into quite serious allegations. Reading between the lines it was clear this lad was nowhere near robust enough for military service.

And good grief it was the touchy feely RAF smile once can only imagine how he would have reacted if he had joined the Army.

"It wasn't easy. I'm a skinny and short guy at 5ft 3… not really what the Royal Air Force expects. I failed the various physical tests. One requirement was running 1.5km within 12 minutes and 12 seconds. Another one was the bleep test, where you had to sprint between two points. I was at a disadvantage with my physical build. If you're 6ft tall, you can take one big step, but that's two steps for me."

Bullst, I'm 5ft 6 and easily met all the requirements back in the 80's and 90's, which was a mile and a half in 10 minutes and the beep test was easy.

The rest sounds like he was a dick, acted like it and pulled the racist card, so everyone was walking on eggshells around him...

"other trainees were made fun of too"

Sounds like he got equal treatment.

Surely the beep test is easier if you’re small and light? The running test isn’t exactly difficult either.

So he wants short and skinny males to be able to do the female fitness test instead?

The best middle distance runners are always small and light aren't they?

I had to laugh at the 12:12 for the 1.5km though, I think they meant 1.5M or 2.4K and even so 12:12 is a disgustingly low barrier to have to achieve for supposedly fit young people.

Yeah, Google tells me it’s a 1.5 mile run. I reckon I could walk a mile in 12 minutes! (OK maybe not but it wouldn’t be far off)

1.5km in 12 minutes, surely that’s not at all difficult. Is it through mud, or water or something? When I’m in shape I can do 5km in 20 minutes on the road, which is decent, but hardly exceptional. That’s 1.5km each six minutes.

It has always been 1.5M it is just a mistake by the BBC reporter I guess.

The British military have been massively pro active at trying to improve behaviours of all sorts in the last decade.

Someone's experience from 2008 is somewhat irrelevant.

I always dreamed of being normal sized as dragging around 18st at 6ft 5 is a lot harder than being built like a running snake. 12 fking minutes. Though in all fairness it must be 1.5m/2.4km not the 1.5km he says - unless that's where he was going wrong in his training!

Sure, but how is that relevant to this case. I read nothing problematic in the entire article. Even the RAF response subtly mocks the allegation:

"The Royal Air Force has an absolute zero tolerance to racism, bullying and hazing of any kind"

Because he's alluding that the issues weren't just with his peers, but amongst the chain of command. And ultimately the CoC is the "RAF" to a recruit.

I didn't see any failure in the chain of command either. Sounds like they were doing everything they could to help him.

Not everyone is suitable for the military, thats just the way it is and doesn't reflect on the individual at all .

When i joined in 86 I got a sheet of what fitness was required ie 20 press ups/sit ups/burpees and 1.5miles in less than 11 minutes , it was expected you would be at this basic level before training!

I ran mine in 9.35 in the first assessment and was about average, speaks volumes about the fitness of this generation , hell when the bleep tests came in during the 90s even fat sergeants who had not ran for decades could pass it

As for his height not helping some of the fittest people I met when serving were his build

I remember doing the bleep test in my late 20s at 18 stone with a basketball team pre season. I was the first to drop out but the coach replied, "you're still fit enough for the Police". I was quite shocked!

There's enough warning about the fitness requirements - even now

Thats right, the enemy now look you in the eye first, ask how you are feeling and would it be ok to touch you with a bullet at full speed?

No chap, that sounds like it wouldn't be nice for me, can't we have tea instead
