This is quite the milestone in this journey. CDC officially advising that if you’re fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask.

Wonder how long until the UK authorities follow suit?

I’m in Sales and visit shops. I walk in with a mask, notice that none of the staff in any of my shops are wearing masks and nearly every single one of them is happy to conduct our meeting in a normal non mask wearing way. We put one on when a customer calls in. Everyone is sick of wearing them. I even sell masks and our sales have fallen off a cliff for masks....I’m pleased to report. It seems despite what some on these forums say and despite what the media would have you believe, normal people are really looking forward to ditching masks in 21st June, they are thoroughly sick of them,it’s a really big deal.

My suspicion is that all of these mask relaxations in the US are related to the inflation we are seeing.

Losing control of inflation is a massive problem for governments who will have to raise interest rates in response. This makes their debts much more expensive and takes down their indebted population.

I suspect they need people back at work and the economy returning to normal ASAP. They can’t really do that whilst simultaneously keeping masks.

Why else the complete 180 in the space of a week? I think economic reality is starting to bite.

Personally I can’t wait till they’ve gone. I think they’ve been one of the most socially and economically damaging elements of the response for virtually no benefit.

Whilst the US will be powering ahead over the next month, we will still be hiding behind our masks from the “Indian variant”.

Or, more likely perhaps given whatever pumped-up variant is on trend this week, it’ll be steady as you go… back into lockdown

Flip side they made the people most susceptible, more likely to try and carry on with life instead of hiding away.

My kids are all stopping wearing them at school next week.

Obviously they’re not vaccinated.

Seems like many of these things are being dialled back now.

U.K. authorities will not follow the US. It would be politically hugely damaging to have different rules for vaccinated.

The next thing will be having something to prove that you've been vaccinated and thus don't need to wear a mask. Maybe some sort of ID badge type of thing which you can hang on a lanyard on your neck.

To be fair most permanent mask wearers are a certain type which is a helpful indicator
they seem the same type that have sat navs stuck right in front of the driver obscuring vision or ste dangling from the rear view mirror .... they will continue to don masks well after the panicdemic is over ...

So a two tier society?

Great. I'm sure that is going to work out well.

But did they protect those most susceptible?

Most of the public seem to be going about their normal lives in lieu of the rules.

Masks seem to be dropping off as mentioned above, and notably the street I live in seems to be packed on the weekend - cars dumped everywhere, not the usual ones you recognise. It rained solidly last weekend, and I very much doubt every one of those guests sat in the garden with a gazebo and a raincoat!!

Let us not forget that the limited window of tying freedoms to vaccination status is closing...

Leana Wen on CNN said:
"We need to make it clear to them that the vaccine is the ticket back to pre-pandemic life. ... If everything is reopened, what's the carrot going to be?"
So it's not about protecting yourself and others - it's about linking freedoms to obedience.

(Strangely that video was very hard to find on Youtube, despite 'going viral' recently. scratchchin )

As per the anticipated data driven timetable wink

It'll be interesting to see how we respond to the Indian variant and whether that scuppers the June release...

It's not that helpful an indicator. I think many of us don't realise how many truly clinical vulnerable people there are, and for whom any additional protection no matter how small a boost, is needed.

I've said it before on this forum, but my wife's an example. 34, to look at her she's in great health. Had both vaccines.

But she's 8 weeks on from the end of chemo for Hodgkins lymphoma and her consultant haematologist, based on best evidence available, reckons she's had at most an 8% immunity boost from being double vaccinated. There's every chance it's done her no good whatsoever. The consequences of her getting COVID-19 are incredibly severe.

So when the pandemic is over and you see somebody wearing a mask, don't assume it's because they're a 'certain type'.

I work for a large global american IT based company, the company wide call yesterday was the leadership pressing ALL employes to get vaccinated to allow for the return to work & to update your profile saying you have had it.
I thought that was pretty galling to be honest but seems to tie in with that that fool biden was tweeting about.
Regardless, no vaccine for me thanks.
