It is all about phycology and leading to where the want to take things next.
I think there is more chance of this one happening as a brief "Holiday" before the push for the autumn lockdown begins.
Mask mandates, and some social distancing restrictions, likely to remain to maintain a sense of "crisis".

I very much doubt it.
There will always be another variant.
Then, we would need to vaccinate the unborn and all our pets.
By that time, everyone will need boosters so everyone would need doing again.
On a personal level, I never wear masks and I mix with who I like, where I like, when I like.
Obviously, I cannot force establishments to open. I am too old for nightclubs, I don't like sports or large concerts but I certainly don't want to stop anyone else enjoying them.

It won't ever be over, this is the new normal which the public have voted for, and will continue to.
The final nail in the coffin is a lockdown later this year, when furlough is no longer around (they will remove that, without a shadow of doubt). That will be the real defining moment. At that point the public will be screaming for financial support, and with the realisation that this in/out uncertainty is going to be around indefinitely due to variants, a UBI system really is the only long term answer.
At that point the new normal begins to take shape. It will sound like a good idea by then to most, despite the sacrifices made to achieve it.
