Rather than put this in the Matt Hancock thread this chap deserves his own thread.

Hopefully he will get to grips with stuff. Keep a sensible eye on things and not get to swayed by the "lock us all down and kicj the can down the road" brigade.

He seems quite a reasonable chap and if he can avoid cock ups and just do a decent job he should be allowed to get on with it

Don't know much about him tbh, will be interesting to read the opinions from those more knowledgeable than I. Glad Hancock is gone though, the odious little creep.

In some ways he has it quite easy - we're over the worst of it so all he has to do is be 'not as st as Hancock' and he'll be seen as doing a good job.

Plus points in his favour. Resigned rather than be a puppet of clown leadership. Was no doubt uncomfortable borrowing billions and lumping debt onto future generations.
Obviously sunak has no problem with this or following fools.

If I recall correctly, he's made the odd populist decision. I'm sure he won't hesitate to do so again.

He's gone down in my estimation by advocating the raising of the minimum legal age for marriage to 18 to try and combat forced marriages in this country whilst at the same time not raising the age of consent to the same. How the hell does he think that's going to work then? You can have sex and get pregnant at 16 but you are not allowed to marry the father?

I have always found him quite reasonable if slightly bland, the archetypal safe pair of hands. Hope he does well and brings some stability to the clown show.

I like Javid, possibly a future party leader.

Seems to have a rare mix of political and business experience and was principled enough to quit over the whole shoddy Cummings/Boris advisors thing.

In terms of how relevant that restriction is though for the general public would be how many girls are getting married at 16 and 17 who are NOT in arranged marriages.

A quick look online, and if this year is representative, suggests that the total for all is 200.

I think Mancock has enjoyed surfing the success of the vaccine and his new found importance a little too much.

The longer he could drag out the vax/lock down/restriction measures, the longer he could cling to some semblance of power. He wasn't going to give it up easily. Perhaps he just needed a little encouragement to go...

Javid is the new broom, lots of warm words about standing on the shoulders of giants/NHS workers etc, now it's time to get on with life/rebuilding the economy/build back better/insert buzzword etc etc.

He's a damn sight better choice than Gove!

Quite agree. He’s the only member of the cabinet that I have any respect for. Time will tell how effective he is in his new role.

Agreed.

Also - he came from humble origins. Dad came over from Pakistan with a pound in his pocket, worked as a bus driver. Javid went to a state school then university then made money in the city. No silver spoon, no nepotism, just hard work (and some luck for sure).

I think he has a very good chance at being leader, but whether he can handle an unruly Tory party is another question. I get the feeling that he lacks the ruthless streak that you need in order to survive at the top.

In many ways he reminds me of John Major.

Tend to agree. I just hope he gets on with the job matter-of-fact without falling into the "you're all heroes" trap. It needs grabbing by the collar and dragging out of the st, not pats on the back.

The NHS is a hot potato I'd rather leave to someone else unless I was given some serious power and that's never going to happen. It's actually better Liebour take it over fairly soon, run it into the ground and then something in the way of reform be attempted. It's a poison chalice pretty much.

I'm not sure it's "principled" to quit when your job has been made completely untenable.

He makes me nervous the same way Starmer made me nervous - people seem keen to project ideals of competence on him without much evidence of the sort of leadership you need in the political arena.

Be interesting to see how the Health Secretary works with the Chancellor.
