Princess Diana would have been 60 on Thursday and Harry is over here to unveil a statue.. But on a motoring note, her Ford Escort is being auctioned today expecting to reach around £30k... Happy bidding....!

Just over £52k with the auction fees.
A 1.6 Ghia was around £6k in 1981 (depending on options) which is roughly £24k in today's money.

King of England buys you a ford escort. That would have been a red flag that he was no good.

Christ, I thought 30k for a black RS Turbo would be good going.

Wow, my parent's paid £16,995 for their house in 1982. I cannot imagine spending the equivalent of 35% of my house value on a mid range Ford.

No wonder a brand new car seemed a very rare sight in the early 80s and way beyond my parents means at the time.

Potato quality, but here's an example of pricing of the Austin Ambassador (made until 1984) - from £5,106: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_Lwd_gZ4hc

The boot badges are in the wrong place.

Are they even the correct ones, they just look very strange to me like the 'Escort' badge is too small.

And the hood ornament is a replica of the one that was originally fitted to the car.

Yes they're the right badges for a pre-facelift Mk3 Escort Ghia. Just too far over to the right.

I mean yes, it was Diana's car, but not a very memorable or interesting one, and she only drove it for 1 year.

I can only conclude that it has been purchased by some Diana obsessive, who still reads stories about her in the Daily Express on a regular basis, and still goes for dinner in specific restaurants in London because "This was Diana's favourite place", and "I'm going to this hairdressers as the stylist used to be Diana's hairdresser".

I have just realised I need to check my Mothers garage for the sudden appearance of gently rusting 1981 Ford Escort.

Indeed.

Seems a bit ghoulish.

I'd want it, I love a Mk3 Escort Ghia. I learnt to drive in one and I'd like to teach my son in one later this year.

But I'd only pay £500 for it.
