Sadiq Khan has decided to maintain compulsory using of masks on London Transport.. I think other Mayors are likely to follow too, with Andy Burnham considering doing the same in Gtr Manchester.

They don't enforce it now, best of luck post-19th.

Edit: Just now - General Secretary of RMT Union:

"He says the London measures are not enforceable by law "which means RMT members will be thrown into a hostile and confrontational situation from next Monday at heightened risk of abuse and assault."

Entirely enforceable, they'll be included in the conditions of carriage - https://content.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-conditions-of-carri...

How?

- they can change the terms of carriage but to my understanding they can't do so in such a way to make a fine enforceable - worst they can do is ask you to leave a train

- they can't make you prove an exemption if you tell them you are exempt

- then practically, there are <400 officers, so max of 100 working across the whole network at any one time. Most of the time chatting in a group amongst themselves doing nothing. Chances of anything happening are negligible.

I don't do masks, have made hundreds of trips on public transport without since their introduction and have never been challenged.

As someone who travels to London frequently, I would like masks to be compulsory and enforceable on public transport

Mask wearing on the tube has been no higher than 60%-65% for at least the last month, and the later in the day it is the lower that percentage is.

And that's when it is a legal requirement backed up by prosecutions and fines.

I give it about a week after the 19th before it defaults to nobody wearing them except the people who actively choose to do so.

Why?

If you're that scared get yourself a proper mask and protect yourself.

Let the rest of us get back to living without this BS

In an attempt to salvage the government’s reputation regarding racism in football at the same time as placating the London Mayor, Bozzer will be rushing through emergency legislation to make the TFL mask requirement enforceable under law, with the caveat that mandatory mask wearing can be waived provided the passengers in question spend their entire journey on one knee.

An eminently sensible compromise, and one I can see gaining universal support here on PH.

To help protect everybody

Its hardly bullst

What are your qualifications on the efficacy of masks in the spread of respiratory virus?

Read and learn

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC72539...

In confined spaces with lots of people it makes sense

I guess you would have opposed the compulsory wearing of seatbelts when it was introduced.

Would you be happy for a surgeon to operate on you without wearing a mask?

Or, everybody who wants protecting can get an N95 mask and protect themselves. Which is closer to the wearing of seatbelts analogy.
What have you got against effective masks?

Nothing against effective masks.

The tube and crowded busses are horrible places and respiratory viruses are spread easily. Why not play safe in those environments? Some of the replies here suggest that people have no idea why masks can be beneficial. The attitude "I don't want to wear one" is pretty selfish, its about "me" rather than the wider implications
