I just saw this and I'm shocked. What on earth are the RNLI volunteers supposed to do?

I firmly believe there is a very clear reason such heartless folk are acting like this and directing such abuse at our galant RNLI volunteers........

Maybe because the people willingly paid to sit in a boat not fit for purpose knowing they will be picked up upon crossing the border? That’s not the role of the RNLI as we all know but of course they can’t ignore it.
I think the migrants are very brave and perhaps don’t understand the perils they risk in order to come here.
Tremendous guys in the RNLI and they don’t deserve and flak.

Yes, I saw this reported in the news today. And I note Farage is calling the RNLI the 'migrant taxi service'.

I'm utterly appalled and disgusted by this. What are the RNLI supposed to do? Let them drown? That's contrary to everything they stand for.

As far as the RNLI are concerned, a life in peril on the sea is to be saved, and then handed over to the authorities on dry land if necessary. Which is exactly what they are doing.

There are some fked up people out there not helped by certain high profile people claiming the RNLI to be a taxi service.

Looking at Twitter, it does seem that people are generally supportive of the organisation and donations seem to be flooding in so at least a little good is coming from other peoples disgraceful behaviour.

Good the see the boss speak out as well.

When I first heard about this, my piss was raised rapidly to superheated. I'm a former RNLI volunteer and to hear about crew being abused for saving lives - disgusting!

And as for Farage? Vile .

Same. And same.

(I'm not a volunteer but my dad was an RNLI governor for a while or something. And I grew up boating, and we always donated to the RNLI. And had them come out to rescue us one time too)

I'm wondering if it will have an impact on their traditional sources of donations though? Obviously it's quite an effort to say "disgusting, I'm taking them out of my will" and then actually going ahead though.

How could people not want to help people fleeing a dangerous war torn country !!
If Nigel had anything to offer he would be calling for the liberation of France ,

Does anyone know what the proposed alternative is?
All I can think of is that they want lifeboat crews spend time before rescuing assessing whether people in danger are here "illegally" or not. That doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

In parallel police are buying the boats in France to stop this activity at source.

We’ll if they end up manning the channel looking out for migrant boats, then it becomes even more of a vicious circle doesn’t it? More boats come because they know as soon as they leave france they will get ‘rescued’ by <whoever>

I don’t donate to rnli so doesn’t make any difference to me but if I did I wouldn’t want them to be doing that. Although I’m sure no one will state it on this thread for fear of mob attack, but that’s probably true of many actual donors

So you support the abuse of unpaid volunteers who risk their lives to save people? Personally I think there are people far more worthy of criticism for putting RNLI crews at risk than migrants.

It's been going on for a while now but Farage's latest had to be met head on by the RNLI.

I am a fundraiser for the RNLI, a branch chair. Our volunteers had been getting abuse for a few years now, although the vast majority of the public love to see us out collecting and stop for a chat, tell us about a rescue or how excited their kids were to visit a station, there are a few that will make a point of telling us how despicable we are for helping someone not English and how they won't ever donate again frown

They just don't get it, we are the charity that saves lives at sea, it matters not who they are. I am so proud to be a tiny part of the RNLI and I am even more proud of my many friends who go to sea anytime in any weather to help those in need, sometimes at great risk to themselves, sometimes in the case of some friends parents, they made the ultimate sacrifice trying to save others.

Screw Farage and the hate rag they call the daily mail.

Fear of mob attack? More like fear of being called out for a disgusting attitude.

Mind you, this is NP&E so I was wondering when the thread was going to start to get negative.

There is a discussion that needs to be had, and action that needs to be taken regarding people smuggling and illegal immigration.

Standing by and watching people drown is not the answer. Abusing people that are prepared to risk their own lives to save people is lower than low and is not an answer.

Anybody that supports such actions, either verbally or mentally, is not fit to comment on the systems, procedures, actions or plans needed to stop the events taking place.

What should they do? Only respond to British registered vessels? Wait until somebody is actually lifeless in the water ?
