There's been an ongoing shortage of ammunition in the US. It's been blamed on purchases of guns, but this is not a totally recent phenomenon and surely there would have been capacity in the whole of the US to manufacture at a higher rate in response?

Is there another reason why ammunition would be restricted?

Supply and demand apparently.

The US has has ammo shortages before so it's nothing new.

It's also affecting the price of ammunition in this country as well unfortunately.

It happens before every election. In case of a Democrat win people start hoarding ammo.
But new factories are being built.

There was plenty for sale in Florida a couple of months ago, no problem at the local range

I struggled to get ammunition in the UK a few weeks ago - it was only .22LR, but choices were restricted (it’s this stuff or nothing) and it was blamed on the US. I’m surprised that they are buying .22LR in droves, but apparently they are.

I reload all of my centrefire rifles, and have noticed no shortage of components at all. It’s just assembled ammunition that is in short supply.

Indeed. I'll happily settle for knowing that my neigbours have enough paper stockpiled to wipe their arse for 20 years over knowing they have an arsenal stacked up sufficient to invade a neighbouring country.

It's one of the commonest calibres in the US(!) They love 22LR over there - it's cheap as chips compared to just about every other calibre, so very popular with target shooters.

My FiL lives over there (and for those who are wondering he keeps 'my' Wildey for me to play with at the range when I'm over there hence my user name), and he has several 22LR guns - in his words, "Cheap & Fun".

shortage of ammo.

does that mean less people will be shot, or more people will be shot ?

or just that it will cost the shooter more if he hasn't stockpiled?

a bit like how much power is needed in a car? but how much ammo is needed to be kept at home?

or bikes = n+1

ammo= n+1000 is always better

which then gets you into how many guns do you need (wear and tear) so G= n+4

which then gets you into how many people (P)do you need to effect a suitable watch and defence? 4 on for 4 hrs 4 on light duties four hrs 4 off. But then to build in illness and such so a squad of about 30 would be a good number to have in your inner circle.

enough = G*n+4 x a*n+1000 + P4 (+ P26)

so as many guns and ammo as you can afford and store is the answer.

The ammunition shortage has been very pronounced for most of the last year, but it's starting to ease. I saw long period of time where there wasn't anything on shelves at all for almost every caliber, bar some very obscure ones.

I'd not seen 300 BLK for most of a year until a couple of weeks ago. 5.56 was in 20 round boxes only for the most part. Same for 9mm.

Right now, apart from the prices being about double what they were pre Covid/BLM, the shelves are about half full, except for .22LR which is in short supply.

As our instructor at the academy said "Nobody ever came out of a firefight and complained they had too much ammo" biggrin

Same number of people shot, but fewer rounds used.
