After a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti back in January 2010 killing an estimated 200,000 people, sadly the country has been hit by an even larger one today... Am really hoping that the casualties aren't anywhere near that many...

That's the confirmed dead so far. The number will increase rapidly I'm sure.
My brother in law went there after the previous big earthquake to film a documentary for a US news channel. Said conditions of housing/health were terrible - and this was several months after the actual event. I doubt that the standard of building has improved significantly since then

Very bad news for a very poor country, went there a few years ago and it is a stunning place.

It is awful, but I'm guessing as the quake in 2010 hit Port-au-Prince more directly the loss of life was much greater, which hopefully meaning the fatalities are less this time...

Pretty much one of the worse places to live. Poverty, poor government, corruption and a combination of earthquakes and hurricanes to kick them whilst they are already down. If they had the money they could probably build earthquake and hurricane resistant buildings but without it any replacement buildings likely to be as bad as the ones lost so ripe to collapse with the next disaster. Not sure what the solution would be (I don’t think they have enough resources or geopolitical significance to attract enough interest from the outside world).

Hopefully the UN won't inflict a cholera epidemic on them as well like they did last time.

Another hurdle for Haitians, first the quake and now rain from a tropical storm hindering rescue attempts....
