Would be hard for them to defend themselves though, so would I not get a default judgement BTW, I will categorically state that Prince Andrew has never touched me...inappropriately or otherwise...and I have stayed in a mews house in Knightsbridge in the past (just off Hyde Park Corner)!

On this general subject - I had someone I was good friends with just cut me off dead in person, remove and block me on social media etc for making the observation that (to paraphrase) "why do these celebs when faced with these decades old allegations just not simply deny it" - after all proof is going to be rather hard to come by etc etc. I was referring to Stuart Hall, as it happens. I was IN NO WAY defending their behaviour, but if you are such a "wrong 'un" to have committed these offences then surely you're just going to say "sorry officer, I have no recollection of these events xx years ago". It was merely an observation, and as I said, I was in no way taking the sex pest's side in the matter.Well, said person never said a word to me, just vanished. Utterly bizarre behaviour. Why on earth would you assume that a friend of many years was defending child molesters and not just clarify the point?

There are, obviously, all kinds of sensibilities involved with this sort of allegation - perhaps your acquaintance, unbeknown to you, had been subjected to something similar themselves, or was close to somebody who had been? Who knows, but as for the point you raise, you get the distinct impression that many of these people carry guilt about whatever they did, and I suppose just don't or can't deny it when confronted years later.
But, that being said, I intensely dislike this approach of throwing famous names around in the press and media in the hope that some more s**t sticks. It's worse in the US of course, because the workings of their legal system are utterly broken, but even British police have embarrased themselves chasing big names to try and crown their careers; Jim Davidson, Cliff Richard, "Nick" and his high profile allegations, etc. If there is a genuine complaint to be made, then it should be dealt with in exactly the same manner as if it had been made against some regular nobody, not result in the BBC's "entertainment correspondant" sitting in a studio discussing whether Dylan's reputation is now shredded within hours of the allegation being made, as was happening this morning.
