How long will it be before air shows get permanently cancelled?

Some of the shouty comments on that article are even more unhinged than usual.

Quite scary isn't it?

Isn’t almost everything that happens, a case of ‘could have been worse’

And also likely ‘could have simply not happened at all’ like 99.99% of things on aeroplanes every time they fly.

Better ban cars and roads, there was an accident on them today.

It’s a very different argument. I’ve flown for 30 odd years, military and civilian, work and pleasure. I’ve also done the same from an ATC perspective.
There’s no doubt that the potential risk of an aircraft ‘showing off’ is far higher than one just flying around!
And in that respect the risks of and air show are potentially far far higher. Which is why they put in so many safety rule to limit interaction between aircraft and people. And AC and ground.

Some pilots can be proper show offs and risk takers though, not easy to control them. In my career I’ve controlled three crashes, two were inexperienced pilots, one an experienced aerobatic pilot. One case was a genuine accident, ac ballooned on landing, stalled snd piled in nose first. Guy with his daughter, both survived minimal injuries.
One was a guy showing off to some woman he was with, starting his take off roll flat out from the holding point, he ended up over turning onto the runway and ran off the side, full power, nosed over, quite messy, again pax pretty much ok.
The aerobatic pilot was just a menace tbh. He ignored any advice, suggestions or instructions as for use of the airfield, grass or hard, he did what he liked. He died in the field behind his house doling aerobatics for his kids birthday party. It was grim.

I’m glad in this case all were ok, it seems to be miraculous they were and damage minimal. Either that was bloody good luck, or the procedures in the event of problems were spot on, or it was most likely a bit of both.

I don't remember that one - when was it? AAIB report?

There goes the old saying, “there are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots”.

Sometimes when these characters kill themselves doing something stupid, it’s a blessing in disguise that they don’t have the opportunity anymore to take anyone else with them.

I’m still confused how this app tallies with every other risk in life ever?

Assuming bad pilots don’t fly busy public displays, what risk is there beyond just life being risky?

Paranoid and safety obsessed people will just kill themselves with stress related disease which is far less interesting than being hit on the head by an aeroplane.
