I've just seen the old paper £20 and £50 notes won't be legal tender after September 30th 2022.

I understand that most banks will happily accept old notes in exchange for new ones. Bank of England guarantees they're worth face value, even if several generations out of date...

I tried to just exchange some old twenties yesterday for new ones on behalf of my disabled brother, and all they would let me do was pay them into my bank account so I then had to draw the cash back out to give to him. I asked if I could pay them into his account and they said no he would have to come down and do it and as he's wheel chair bound that wasn't an easy option.

The BoE will always accept them. The reason banks make you pay it in is to avoid money laundering.

Bugger! The new polymer £50s just don’t roll the same and the plastic notes make a huge mess when you use one to light a cigar.

I understand they are worried about money laundering but as I paid it in and then drew it straight back out I couldn't see the difference!

There is a difference - there’s now an electronic trail.

And if you are self-employed and get a auditid they will be asking where that cash came from. Thinking you have being doing cash jobs on the side.
But probably not a issues with the amount of you are probably on about.

I do think some cash taking shops, restaurants in certain areas have had a bumper few years. Since they said they where getting rid of the old notes.

I’d imagine you’re right!
