the most shocking thing to me is that this is legal, I thought dolphins were protected internationally

They can't hate them that much if they eat them.

Only certain species of Dolphin are protected.

The same kind of hunt happens in Japan and it's even more questionable as there's no consensus as to whether the meat is safe to eat. There could be dangerous levels of mercury contamination due to accumulation from the dolphins eating contaminated fish.

Yup, I pretty much hate humans and what we do to other species, let alone ourselves.

They are food so I don't have a big issue with the actual eating of them so to speak.

The method of killing is not ideal in my books, however its very similar to Kosher and Halal and I suspect 99% of meat eaters in the UK eat Kosher / Halal meat on a fairly regular basis.

Just because our animals are slaughtered behind closed doors does not make the actual process any better. I think a lot of people could do with a tour of an abattoir to actually see what goes on as there is very little understanding in the UK of how we kill our animals and I think the methods used are far removed from what people think when a cow goes sleepyweepy.

No excuse for this in our modern world.

There should be a hell of a lot more international condemnation of this.

I need educated on this...

I eat meat and don't see much of a difference from this (albeit this is a large scale even by their standards) to other meat/fish eaters.

Is it because dolphins are in short supply? or because of their intelligence?

I kind of see their point as historically whale and dolphin hunts at this time of year were important to lots of Scandinavian culture. Needed the meat and blubber to see them through winter. Obviously that’s not so much the case now and it would be better (imo) if they could do something ceremonial without the mass animal slaughter.

Well the issue is their intelligence. They are considered highly intelligent for animals, probably smarter than the average footballer.

" tradition that has been practised for hundreds of years on the remote Faroe Islands."

Unless banned, or they are paid cash, it will continue.

As long as it's humanely done, and the animals eaten can we really complain about this and Japan? If the UK waters had regular dolphins and whales we too would have been traditionally eating them for centuries.

Then Hindu's in India think we are barbaric for killing sacred cows.

But not intelligent enough to realise they were in danger?

All animals are intelligent to some level.

That’s a lot of dolphins. I can’t see that need that many… what is the size of the local population?

Well you cannot give Dolphins an IQ test

In terms of what can be physically observed two indicators of high intelligence in Dolphins

Wikepedia said:
Comparison of actual brain size with the size expected from allometry provides an encephalization quotient (EQ) that can be used as a more accurate indicator of an animal's intelligence.

The encephalization quotient varies widely between species. The La Plata dolphin has an EQ of approximately 1.67; the Ganges river dolphin of 1.55; the orca of 2.57; the bottlenose dolphin of 4.14; and the tucuxi dolphin of 4.56;[9] In comparison to other animals, elephants have an EQ ranging from 1.13 to 2.36;[10]: 151  chimpanzees of approximately 2.49; dogs of 1.17; cats of 1.00; and mice of 0.50.[11]
Then there is the ratio of brain at birth to adult size

wikipedia said:
The majority of mammals are born with a brain close to 90% of the adult brain weight.[12] Humans are born with 28%[12] of the adult brain weight, chimpanzees with 54%,[12] bottlenose dolphins with 42.5%,[13] and elephants with 35%.[14]

Did we historically eat them and then stop? And if we didn't eat them, why not.

I've no idea, most likely to have been the north of Scotland and Shetland & Orkney. I'd guess we don't fish them now as our fishing industry moved from feeding fisherman to big business and dolphins aren't big business.
