Using the instruction set printed in the back of the ZX81 manual to hand assemble code to create very simple games, poked into RAM by a rudimentary hex editor. Then having precisely one frame flash in front of your eyes to try and work out what you'd done wrong. Rinse and repeat, all night.
That's the beginnings of my career, right there. 1k space invaders and 1k missile command got me a job, and I've not looked back (actually that bit's a lie, I spent some time in embedded systems).
