A mate of mine posted this elsewhere. I agree with every word.

So the latest Superman has been revealed by DC comics as bisexual……. Why oh f*****g why ?

I have absolutely no issue with anyone’s sexuality, I just don’t see the benefit to anyone of a comic book hero having any sexuality at all. And before anyone says anything about being representative of the world at large, can I point out that he doesn’t exist and has been drawn with a pencil!

And another thing……This was the 12th story in the BBC newsfeed today…..Further down, much further down, was an article of a real superhero. A story of an incredibly talented person who fought the establishment to get to the top of their field, who was prevented from entering the USA as they were associated with Communism. Who was beset by rheumatoid arthritis for years and was the only English woman to win a Nobel prize.

Somehow I feel that today, more people will have a view about a pencil drawn superhero than will have a view about Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, a real superhero.

Just to point out, Superman does have a sexual orientation, up until now hes always been portrayed as straight. I quite like marvel and DC and plenty of superheros have had a sexual orientation, but I can't think of may gay or bi ones. I believe around 10% of the population are believed to not be straight, I just guess they are looking to represent this.

If as you quite rightly point out he is merely a character and drawn with a pencil why does it bother you so much?

I'd have been impressed if they'd done this in about 1982 during the AIDs epidemic.

Otherwise people won't know how progressive DC Comics are.

Now it's proudly signalled to all and there's no doubt about it!

Because such comic book characters don’t need to be sexualised at all. Just keep to the good old violence.

But superman is sexualised, he is portrayed as straight. Would you rather he be asexual or non-binary?

No you don’t.

Reality is probably very few will get upset about it but those that do will make much more noise than the ones that couldn’t care less as usual. But that does mean there is a case for speaking out as a don’t give a fker some times. As otherwise you’d be led to believe the noisy minority represent us all.

It’s really irrelevant, comics are eating themselves, there’s no market, kids don’t buy comics anymore adults do, so they are selling to a certain, very narrow, demographic.

Look at the backlash last year (airc) when Marvel launched two woke hero’s literally called Safespace and Snowflake…the writer said she didn’t care if audience didn’t like it, they can just stop reading…they did, she was let go, the readers didn’t come back.

Comics books have been strung along for ages as lose leaders into films, it’s where the films get the ideas that then make billions, sadly now we’re in a phase where the films can make their own story.

But people are getting upset by it, its same on the other thread. And yes I do find it odd and I certainly don't feel lead by the vocal minority, far from it
