Incredible building wins architecture prize - Charles?
Discussion
Where's Prince Charles to say what he thinks about this new building in Kingston ( is that on Thames?)
You can see from the juxtaposition in the video, just how well it fits in with its surroundings
Is it finished

There is more to a building than how it looks, looks are completely subjective.
This building won mostly because of how it functions and how the space works
That, architecture prizes aren't just aesthetic considerations. This building won mostly because of how it functions and how the space works
Saying that, as a fan of brutalism and modernism, I like it.

I quite like it. And buildings don't have to look like every other building around them to fit it.
I do suspect, however, that once it's been used by students for 10yrs, and nature takes its toll, that it risks looking s
t later in its life and will be ripped down.
I'm always a bit suspicious of self-congratulatory prizes too, having worked on a few initiatives and seeing how the submissions processes work. Not dissimilar to the Oscars.

As someone who works at Kingston Uni, the prize givers obviously see something the rest of us still don't get. To me, it's a complete waste of space. It was desgined for a vice chancellor who's only consideration was for dance and art, so, apart from the huge library the rest of the building is for the performing arts, while civil engineering, on the same campus, is completely ignored and underfunded.
It seems to have won because of what it's like inside, largely.
IMO that is a good thing, because buildings are primarily for being in, not looking at. They are - or should be - designed for the user not the observer.
Not to say aesthetics should.not play a part but it should be subservient to function. Far too many landmark buildings are utterly conventional and unimaginative inside An office in the Shard is exactly the same as an office anywhere else apart from the view.

I'm not sure how you manage the logic leap from whether the building is a worthy winner of the Stirling Prize (I happen to think that it is but it is a subjective matter open to debate) to the funding priorities of the universityHow can anyone think this building is worthy of any prize???
Looks more like abandoned buildings in Pripyat/Chernobyl than anything useful... a blot on the landscape!
