The new John Lewis ad
Discussion
Seems to be detracting from a couple of other threads.
A glorious antidote to toxic messaging or "everything that’s wrong with modern Britain" as the Telegraph put it?
The new John Lewis advert is a glorious antidote to toxic ‘boys will be boys’ messaging
Why the new John Lewis advert is everything that’s wrong with modern Britain

This kind of thing is always interesting. Company makes a contentious/controversial ad, and people react. Some react positively, some negatively. Lots of discussion is had.
Company can't lose, because whether you like the ad or despise it, we're talking about it, and the company. It keeps their name in media outlets, social media, forums, etc. There will be some that are put off shopping there by the company having a particular view (or perception that they have that view), but plenty more will carry on regardless or be attracted to a company that's seen to be "on trend" (whether you see that as good or bad).
I think companies care foremost about their image (big companies especially) and profits. The top execs at John Lewis probably don't really care about gender diversity, but they do care about seeing to care. This sort of acceptance of diversity is this decade's hot agenda, in the same way the environment has been (and continues to be) in previous decades.

There's been way too much of this boys are blue and wear trousers girls are pink and wear dresses stuff for years. It's pretty difficult to get angry about a made up advert of a kid enjoying themselves.
Just enjoy it for what it is which is a bit of fun and if it winds a few people up better still

Do I like the advert? No. Would it stop me using JL services? No. The job of an advert is to be seen by as many as possible, and by going woke they knew it would go viral online.
As their ongoing financials show, they don't know their main customers though as losing money hand over fist. So lets hope sales go up, or someone gets fired. One or the other.
