Rishi is due to set out 2021 New Budget this afternoon. So will we be battening down the hatches, or will this be opportunities for Good News from the Chancellor?

The <15K will be protected

The >400K will be protected

The 60-150K will be taxed to death.

And yet, they are all afraid to go anywhere near income tax as the other side will jump up and down screaming "regressive" and other such bks.

Mid term so some powder will be kept dry,
Hopefully rising fuel prices will have reduced the temptation to hammer drivers, sounds like there is some plans afoot for alcohol taxes, doubt there will be much to encourage enterprise ,think it will be a bit meh !!

Even if its loaded with good news (unlikely), it will be met with the usual wailing and poor reporting. The BBC running classic poor reporting this morning on rising NMW. Headline says:

"Wage Rises will put 30p on a Pint", Boom, shock horrors etc.

Article actually says:

"But now it faces further challenges - not just minimum wage rises, but also higher energy and food costs, as well as employers' national insurance contributions going up next April.

The price of beer "would probably have to go up by 25 to 30p a pint" to take account of all that, Mr Watson said."

So its really 4 factors causing cost of the pint to go up, NOT just NMW.

This place will go into meltdown with spoofed rage.

If he starts giving away free money to anyone having just increased taxes by 1.25% I will be mightily pissed off.

I’ve a feeling the £20/week universal credit will be made a permanent benefit.

I wonder if he will also push the tax free threshold up to £13k?

Possibly reduce VAT on utilities - to counter the price inflation and would be net neutral to the govt.

BBC quality has really fallen off the cliff over the last few years, particularly after witnessing the nonsense they have published over the pandemic. They seem to be going after the clicks to compete with Ladbible.

Due to the CO2 shortage cars that produce over 250g/km become tax exempt.

Due to the crisis in mental health the duty on Wine, Beer & Champagne has been lifted, but only if drunk with a friend.

Due to the huge hole in the public finances it has been decided to the restructure nothing and leave well alone as even changing a logo in the public sector results in waste and costs of millions.

The tax lottery starts from January. Everyone's taxes go up by £2.50 a week from January 1st 2022. Once a week an NI number gets randomly selected and that person never pays tax again. There is an option to join the Wednesday Lottery and pay an extra £2.50 to go in the second draw.

I think they've categorically said VAT won't be reduced on utilities, haven't they?

Hang on. You've been all over the Covid threads saying 'no biggie' and taking the piss out of anyone who has a problem with what the government is doing. And now you're going to be pissed off if you have to contribute paying towards it?

But because BEEB many people believe it's the highest quality reporting. They are either playing it for clicks, or they are sloppy.

Anyway, I'd like to think the government throw in something for decent adult education and training grants. NO reason why they can't, and I don't see why Student Loans should only be for degree's when we need plenty of skills NOT catered for in traditional universities. Certainly in a post Brexit world it would make sense to make access to learning easier for the ENTIRE population - not those under 24 or societies edge cases.

Newspapers: Rishi briefs us that he is against all the spending Boris proposes.

Months later

Newspapers: Rishi briefs us about public sector payrises, billions more for NHS and other magic money tree spending.

Rishi wants to be PM and will look to be Mr Nice guy.

yes

Wouldn’t it be nice for a government to think about helping rather than beating us down?
