This makes me sad.
Discussion
I have spent my career in HR (not the most popular job) because I really do believe that people are the essential part of any organisation. I passionately believe in the right person for the job, regardless of age, sex, race etc.
But when I see this it makes feel sad, and, as a white man, somewhat discriminated against. This isn’t some ‘anti-woke’ or hidden bigotry post. But I can’t help who I am, so why would it be harder for me to get a job with this firm than others of a different sex or race?

Question is, how can the innocent Generic White Man appropriately categorise himself so he isn't discriminated against?
It's not possible to become a woman or change skin colour, but some other ideas:
- state you are of Romany/Gypsy heritage - believe this is often a separate ethnicity tick box & is unverifiable.
- lie about sexuality? Again, unverifiable.

This happened in South Africa back in the 90's.
It was known as 'affirmative action'.
Now, in a country that has a predominantly non white population, this was accepted (and expected with the abolition of apartheid) - but in a country that has a predominantly white population?
EDIT: Just to be clear - I believe that a person should be employed based on their skills and suitability for the role, and race should not come into it at all.

It’s not even about hiring, it’s about interviewing.
They can still hire white men but have to demonstrate that they've interviewed other demographics. But there's the greater target of tripling the numbers of female and minority folk in senior roles by 2023. I have a suspicion that anyone playing funny with the process and not doing their bit for that 2023 will find themselves forfeiting bonuses, or on the way out...Johnnytheboy said:
In the UK, it would be interesting to ignore this policy, get sacked, then take your former employer to a tribunal.
They won't be sacked, they'll get a lower bonus.Maybe what will happen is that all the high-performing hiring managers will move to an organisation that recruits purely on a merit basis and "woke" organisations such as this one will go broke because they've not been recruiting the best person for the job.... so really they're only hurting themselves.
As part of my old job I was in charge of recruitment for the sector I worked in. We always recruited our view of the right person for the job and I certainly could not give 2 f
ks about either the colour of their skin or their sex gender. I'd be amazed if anyone other than a small minded minority cares about it either.
Makes a good headline though and winds us all up.

Which newspaper is this and which banks are applying this policy?
I think I know why you asked that question and was thinking the same myself. But it does indeed appear to be a legit story. The article appeared in CityAM and also The Times. It relates to the bank State Street (no, me neither!) who have since denied the policy.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/11/07/in...
"State Street said it required managers to demonstrate they had interviewed female and ethnic minority candidates and that executives’ bonuses are tied to whether they had met targets to boost recruitment of minority staff. "
"But a spokesman dismissed a report in The Sunday Times that hiring white men would require approval. It added that appointments could be challenged to address the risk of bias and also signalled it expects hiring managers to produce diverse shortlists of candidates. Recruiters must put together a panel including at least one woman and one person of colour, it said."
"The company is the latest to link executive pay to diversity targets. Santander said recently that bankers would get bigger bonuses for hiring more women and minorities, as well as demonstrating progress on climate change. "
"The Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority have said they could force companies to link bonuses to diversity targets, saying progress in the area needs to be sped up."
