Looks like they are intending to go ahead with this.

Pestering women in the street set to be outlawed

Usually the Telegraph is paywalled but this loads for me so presume this article is free for everyone.

What I find ridiculous is the linking of cat calling or wolf whistling to murder, of course these things should be outlawed because at the very least they are cringy, but to try to make the link between a scaffolder shouting phwoar to being dragged off the streets and murdered but a sociopathic police officer is stupid in the extreme.

Sounds like the sort of law that might have prevented the disgusting incident that happened in Sheffield 2 days ago where some men approached a woman walking her daughter to school and tried to buy her daughter with cash.

Article said....

"A MUM was left terrified after men asked to buy her daughter as she walked the youngster to primary school.

Detectives in South Yorkshire have launched a probe.

They're calling for anyone with information to come forward, and say they're searching for a ringleader of Middle Eastern origin who is in his late 30s or early 40s.

He was wearing dirty navy bottoms, a grey hoodie with stripes down the side and a 'head warmer', which partially covered his face."

Hopefully it will be a law used against all perpetrators regardless of any other factors.

The offer of cash should have rung alarm bells.

I seriously doubt it.

How do you even make that connection?

Soooooo.....
when negotiating a bunch of barely clad, drunk and abusive hen-partyists making lewd and suggestive comments... what should old fogeys (3/4 century old) or anyone else for that matter, like me do? Are they going to be prosecuted as well!?!?!?!?!?!
Approaching anyone of either sex (sorry gender, sorry pronoun) in such a manner is reprehensible and is never acceptable by myself or AN other....

Especially when there’s already Law’s that cover harassment etc

You don’t need to keep making NEW Law’s just enforce the ones you have already

I don't think I'm generally regarded as the most "woke" SJW on here, but I suspect the reasoning is that reinforcing that poor behaviour towards women might help it not become ingrained in some people. Which might in turn stop the next action and the next action. The rationale is likely that it's the constant objectification of women that contributes to some people taking that too far - pinching their arse, intimidating them in night clubs, forcing themselves on women etc.

I can see that to a point. But I would be very, very surprised if this law doesn't end up causing issues the other way and ultimately becomes difficult/impossible to enforce. I also thi k there must be other laws that cover peoe being tts to other people and that broad brush authority never works. Hit the people who do these things very hard.

If it happened 100% the law would not "Prevent" that because honeslty if your offering to buy children do you think the law is much of an issue for you?

I don't think that's quite what's being said.

But if you look at Couzens there's a pattern of behaviour that if it had been nipped in the bud earlier might have made a difference, or of course might not have.

Likewise sometimes events like Sarah Everard's murder are a catalyst to make people come forward and speak about just how much of an issue harassment is for women.

They do phone-ins on LBC and there's one on this hour and some of the stuff the women calling in are speaking about is just awful but seems to be an almost daily or regular occurrence.

Is there an offence right now that covers "He sat opposite me on the train staring intently at my tits for 20 minutes"?

The article suggests the answer is no and the intention is to make that sort of thing easier to deal with.

No doubt it will be badly written too - some bloke will politely ask a girl out and she will claim pestering. And plod will rush out and arrest first and ask questions later.

This, however, is where I see any law being impossible to enforce properly.

People staring blankly because they're stressed/tired? Blind/sight impaired? Pervs wearing sunglasses? People glancing around being accused?

Trying to legislate for where and how people are looking? Good luck with that....

Shouting abuse? Maybe easier. Physical abuse? Laws already exist.

There was a thread over in SP&L recently because TfL were putting up posters.

That was wrong too apparently.

We already have plenty of legislation that is subjective and uses words like "fair" and "reasonable" because you can't always clearly write something down but you know it when you see it.

I honestly don't think you're going to see a bunch of blind people being locked up for inadvertently staring at women nor are you going to see someone locked up for daring to say hello to a woman.

If that happens I think we'd all agree something isn't working.

There seems to be agreement that there's a problem and time and time again on here we see some men are just plain creepy and think women bring unwanted attention on themselves and it's fine to wolf whistle or stare or whatever.
