Portland. One of the most hip and liberal cities in the USA. Home to some of the biggest BLM demos after the George Floyd murder.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Floyd_protest...

As per The Times today (paper copy no link). Following the riots $15m was cut from the police budget and a gun violence unit accused of targetting people of colour was disbanded. Result - murders up from 25,26,36 in 2017-2019 to 80 in 2021 so far.

The mayor has approved a rise in police funding and a new gun violence unit. Closing the stable door?

Let’s not even talk about the police not being interested in stolen goods of less than 999 dollars, leading to chain store pulling out of cali. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/nov/15/wa...

Or the gunfight in the middle of a road around, leaving one dead and several injured, 70 rounds fired but no interest in any prosecutions as it was deemed mutual combat, so it’s allowed.
https://torontosun.com/news/world/no-charges-in-de...

Or the guy who threatened a sherif with a blade who was then released after only 4 days, goes on to machete a father in the face, leading to the loss of an eye, in front of the guys kids on a beach.

Do the police prevent murders or do they show afterwards to investigate what happened?

They are now suffering the consequences of their foolish political gestures. A shame for those who have been left toes-up.

I imagine even if they only did the latter, if the chance of getting caught was high it would work as a deterrent.

"In June, Oakland's city council passed a budget proposal that removed $18.4 million from the city's police budget, moving that cash instead to "violence prevention measures and social services.""

That worked well.

How do they know that the defunding policy is causative in regards to the crime increase. What is the evidence?

A large rise in 2020, and we'll see what the rise is at the conclusion of 2021 if it's happened again.
Have they gone up 200% in a couple of years though - or is that just in the places which have caved to the moronic "defund the pigs" campaigns?

There is probably more than one factor in play. That said post George Floyd it seems many of the proactive arrests are no longer happening.. Both because there are less police out there and because the police that are left feel the risk of being sued fired or prosecuted for doing their job. It's human nature. Police are not paid per arrest. So if they feel arrests are more risky from perceived lack of backup they will make fewer arrests.

After the George Floyd protests started in New York City, the New York Police Department logged 45,000 fewer arrests from June to December — a 38% decline while the Big Apple added more than 100 additional homicides (a 58% increase).

From June through the end of this February, Chicago’s police made 31,000 fewer arrests — a 53% decline as murders rose 65%. In Louisville, where massive unrest included the shooting of two police officers during a protest, homicides jumped 87% as the police made 35% fewer vehicle stops since June while arrests plummeted 42% during summer months compared with 2019."

The police enforce laws, so I'm not sure how they could prevent murders.

I do think it important to understand what "defund the police" was all about.

The arguments (which had merit) were that the police departments in question were so institutionally broken that they could not be reformed. Instead, they should be de-funded and something different tried. Whether that be an all-new police department with fresh staff, fresh leadership, or something else.

Camden NJ is one model.

Just defunding policing / law enforcement / etc *in general* was never sensible.

Is the guy on the back left holding a G3?
I sold mine, but it had a wooden stock, not an adjustable AR-15 type.
