Scotgov are currently doing a 'pupil census' which asks some very personal questions about sex, there has been a huge backlash to this with many councils saying they will not participate, and parents asking who needs this information and why, what is it going to be used for, what will happen to the data?. It isn't anonymous and the participants will be recorded with a unique ID.

Opinions are divided as you can imagine, is it sordid or is it legit?, does this information have a genuine reason and need to be collected, or is it the state prying into childrens lives for dubious reasons?

I didn't see where it said it wasn't anonymous; I think it's fine to ask pupils to complete one if they want anonymously though. Plenty of kids are having sex by fourteen, or at least they were when I was at school (unfortunately I wasn't one of them) and this would help them understand the risk levels.

I had a quick skim read of that article as i will heading out shortly and i couldn't see a question specifically about anal sex, only the one about using a condom if having vaginal or anal penetrative sex.

Edit: It seems the thread title has now been changed.

It’s complete false outrage to say “our children are being corrupted!!” and then in the same breath to say “will the government do anything about teenage pregnancy??”
This ^

The complaining is more ridiculous hand wringing. These are teenagers who are 15-18. It’s important to understand how sex and relationship education is working and how it needs to be taught in future.

Oh give over.

Anonymous surveys like this absolutely need to be and should be conducted.

It’s complete false outrage to say “our children are being corrupted!!” and then in the same breath to say “will the government do anything about teenage pregnancy??”

How does anyone propose educating kids about healthy relationships and safe sex without knowing what the current state of play is?

I haven’t seen the survey in full but I’d hope it also includes questions on
- Consent
- Sharing (and being asked to share) sexually explicit photos via social media/messaging platforms
- Use of pornographic websites

The hand-wringers can FRO.
Nail on head.

I played neopets untill 16, never once did I look up buffy the vampire slayer in the buff on my 56k intefnet and use all my mums ink over and over again. Never did i use kazaa and I certainly wouldn't even be able to understand what those questions in the form would even mean, potentially corrupting my poor we soul.

Seems like many of them do, then moan when schools and govt don't make up for their lack of parenting in exactly the way they want.

I'm surprised at the lack of anonymity as I can only see that hindering getting responses.

Sorry missed the nail by a mile. Ignoring the moral issue as some one with a lot of experience in statistics I would suggest the survey is a complete waste of time and money.

The history of surveys on sex is not good. The early studies in the 50/60 of US college students for example showed most of the men where having sex where as only a few women where. The where 2 possible answer either some of the women where complete sluts or people where lying.

The fact is people lie on surveys, they lie more on anonymous surveys, they lie even more on surveys on sex, and children lie even more. I would not be surprised if some results showed in some schools there where regular orgies.

Fair points.

I took brickwall's comments to be more about the moral side and about it being a good thing to understand what people are doing if you want to educate and raise awareness.

I know bugger all about statistics but if they get bad data I'd agree entirely that it needs to be looked into as to how to get good data.

What business does a load of Scottish perverts/politicians have in asking school kids about they’re underage fumblings?

Because, apparently, they must have "good data".
