Reminds me why I'm happy UK police don't routinely carry guns, and those that do get decent training.

So terrible!

In the UK the suspect would have been arrested - not killed, and innocent bystanders would not have been put at risk.

US cops are trigger-happy, and I can understand this to an extent because it is so likely that any suspect might be armed with a gun.

I think you've stumbled on the vast gulf in the daily risk of death or injury that exists between
the average US and UK cop.
It's always worth considering that an American 14 year old could have a gun.

I agree, America is awful, we are much superior.

RIP the poor girl. As a 56 year old, am I typical of most British people in that I've never, ever felt at risk of being shot in my whole life? I might have felt at risk of being thumped (and have been once) or at the very, very outside being threatened with a knife or even stabbed (neither has actually happened). By gun violence is outside of my experience. And I say that as a South East Londoner.

I'd say that is the case for citizens of the vast majority of countries other than the USA, Mexico, Brazil and a few other hell holes.

Although in this particular case the 14 year old was not involved, indeed the officer didn't even know she was there.

This isn’t about the police carrying guns. This is all about the culture. First the police have no idea how to deal with anything other than shooting it. Secondly the US police have a confrontational attitude to everything (as anyone who has asked a New York cop for directions). Third, people will report gunshots even if they have not heard anything because it gets the cops to react faster.

Kids getting shot is a fairly common occurrence in some lawless US cities. Usually by street gang crossfire and stray bullets zipping through windows and walls. In Chicago alone, the police reported that 261 children had been shot, of whom 41 died in 2021 so far (figures from September).

Of course the agenda-driven media only really take notice when it's an officer involved shooting.

15 people reacted to that story with a 'heart' emoji. They actually like reading about kids being killed by police officers? Please shoot some more so we can enjoy the story?

I assume to be a cop in the US you first have to fail an IQ teat.

I know that's not possible but they must manage it somehow.

“agenda-driven media”? That we expect cops to have a higher standard than gangbangers? rolleyes

Certain types scream for the defunding of police forces.

What they should be screaming for is tax payers being made to dig that bit deeper into their pockets and
properly fund the training of police officers to de-escalate situations, work out where when and why to shoot and work out the difference between a taser and a gun.

Crime is out of control in some parts of the US. I am in California at the moment and its obviously bad, since the day we got here we have seen stuff like open drug dealing etc. We had our car broken into yesterday, broad daylight, parked on a high street in town. There are very few police patrolling the streets. In LA over the course of maybe 4 or 5 days I probably saw 2 LAPD cops. In London you are tripping over police, especially in the tourist areas.

This trip has opened my eyes to the massive problem the US has especially on the west coast. The homeless and drug problem is just on another level. I have not seen anything like this in New York or Miami or a few other big east coast cities. You cant understand just what that means until you see all these people off their heads on drugs wandering the streets with no one to keep control. Even in fairly rural places there are people hanging around gas stations and on street corners, clearly rough sleepers, all smashed off their heads. From what I heard locally they want to make even more drugs legal and also reduce even more crimes to offences where you just get a ticket rather than a criminal record.

Their news TV is just weird and makes very little mention of crime. The day we got here there was a cop shot and it got about 15 seconds coverage.

60 US police officers have been shot during 2021.

Such killings are extremely rare in UK. It's a different world.

Imagine a job where every day there is a chance that the bad guys you are paid to go after, may shoot you first.

It's easy to be a sanctimonious Brit when the only daily danger you are ever likely to happen is the sandwich van not turning up.
