His death, now being reported, seems worthy of a thread. He won’t be universally lauded of course but I think history will be kind. RIP

Eh? What did Tutu do that any reasonable person could deem him not to be laudable? A life well lived. What he was such a big part in achieving in S Africa via the truth and reconciliation commission was one of the global high points of the last 50 yrs.
The fact that it has all gone a bit t**s up since shouldn't detract from that.
Also a funny guy with a puckish sense of humour and quite a rorty laugh.

A broadly good and decent man who used his Anglican mission as a force for good in ending apartheid.
Many will argue that religion and politics should not mix (and many who should have known better at the time did). I believe, however, that both history and God will judge him to have been right not to cross by on the other side when he was confronted with a profound moral wrong
