Jimmy Carr 'joke'
Discussion
Apologies if I've missed a discussion on this ,but what are peoples thoughts on this story ? For me, being old !,I dont believe for one second he was condoning his remarks ( nor am I for clarity ) but I am a firm believer in free speech and am genuinely aggrieved at people seemingly being offended on my behalf. News flash......I will decide what I watch, listen to and be offended by.
Had to go hunting for it, but this is what he actually said

Not funny IMO but comedy is about offending at times so I don't think he should be "cancelled".

100% against the concept of consequences for exercising one's rights as they are then no longer rights.
So you think that people should just be able to say whatever they want to whoever they want at any time?100% against the concept of consequences for exercising one's rights as they are then no longer rights.

Jimmy Carr got himself a Netflix special. It was on everyone's 'will get around to it' watch-list position. Lots of controversy and now viewer numbers will be great and he will probably be asked to do another one.He has been around a long time has Jimmy, was it calculated to cause a bit of offense for PR? Following the footsteps of the Chapelle Netflix specials.

Do you actually mean that, or is there a missing bit in the second line?100% against the concept of consequences for exercising one's rights as they are then no longer rights.
If you wrote what you mean, how can you be against someone suffering consequences for their actions? If I exercised my right to free speech and insulted your wife/girlfriend/mother, the consequences might be that you punch me on the nose, or call me an idiot, or decide never to talk to me again. Going by your statement you would be against being allowed to do any of those things, or to take any action whatsoever against me.
I can see argument for saying you are 100% for free speech, but people exercising that right should also be aware that exercising that right comes with the risk of consequences for their actions.

Within the law, that's exactly what I think. You might think that the suppression of the right to free speech is a good idea but I can't support you on that.(To whomever, btw).
