help for Ukrainian families . . .

As the war unfolds in Ukraine, it is plainly obvious to us that it is impossible for any of us to really help make a difference to anyone involved, from the comfort of our own country.

Having looked at all the options, we have decided to help by offering part of our home to any Ukrainian family fleeing the conflict. We can provide friendship and a calm, safe space for as long as needed that we hope will go some way to helping them rebuild their lives here in England.

We do not need any money or donations from anyone – all we ask is that you visit, like and share our Facebook Page – thank you

what about other refugees of a different nationality?

stay as long as needed? how long is that?
do you feed them as well?
Is it a self contained part of your home or do they have keys to the whole property?


curious as to the practicalities.

The best way is to try and do your best, and do what you can. Worry about immediate needs first and then work out what you can do as you go along. Not every offer to help has to be planned to the Nth degree.

Well done OP that’s over and above generous!

There is an aid truck leaving here in a few days I’m busy pinching the kids toys, old clothes, and will buy a load of toiletries to send. Every little helps. They need all the help we can provide.

yes - what is the practicalities of taking on a refugee family?

Do you feed them as well or rely on food banks other donations?

There is no embarrassment on me in asking questions as to the practicalities of taking on refugees as the OP has said they wish to do.

I added other questions as well to the - do you feed them as well?

In the medium/long term this might make a very nice offer for a Ukranian family who wishes to stay in the UK for whatever reason (I suspect we're talking tiny numbers tbh)

Right now what's desperately needed on a huge scale is basic survival stuff...things like toiletries, basic medical supplies, thermal clothing, as well as logistics to get all the stuff there.

Please give what you can to charity- it's truly awful what's going on.

Does it matter whether the OP can afford to feed them himself or if he asks food banks or charities for help to do so? Someone will make sure they get fed somehow.

I have a few days off later next week, and have been toying with the idea of filling my campervan with food, clothes and medicine and driving it over to Poland to drop off to those who need it. Do you know where specifically the aid truck goes, as if I do this, I want to be sure that I am handing it over to the a legitimate group.

You have to be a bit careful with where to give, rather predictably there are scammers trying to get your money and saying it's for Ukraine

in my experience, having tried to "help" lots of people from all different countries all over the world over the years - the best way to actually make a difference is to find some direct way of DIY - direct to the people who actually need the help - way too many scammers out there.

I am not a fan of giving money or giving stuff to charity - hence the offer of our home!

Just imho of course - and I realise not everyone is in the position to do anything + that not all charities are the same.

PISC CIC they have a Facebook page. Leaving on 4th March I read donations coming from all over the NE we are sending them to Liverpool.

It's a very worthy idea but I fear major hassle getting that stuff through the ports at Dover due to Brexit (there may also be VAT implications?) - it would probably also be much cheaper to buy in Poland and tie in with the logistics channels...goodness knows how possible that is though.

Not to mention hurdles crossing borders right now due to varying corona / vaccination regulations.
