Show of solidarity ?

People were banging pots and pans outside for the NHS 18 months ago, not a lot of point but did reinforce that NHS staff were going above and beyond.

We are limited in what we can do, not everyone can donate money and its a way they can join in.

Plus, when folk realise they didn't die of hypothermia and saved a few quid maybe they will twig you dont have to have your gaff at 20C all day every day, well most of us dont.

I had an enforced four days of no electricity or running water or central heating after the storm recently.

You're OK, I'll just be there with them in spirit. That was the worst four days for a long time.

Should we also turn off all the power stations that are gas powered and generate around 40% of the electricity in this country as well?

We went without heatingg or hot water for a couple of weeks when our boiler hissed its last in Feb 2021 which was properly cold for UK standards, survived.

Pensioners go on about how hardy they were, by and large they just put up with st conditions, but critically humans are resourceful and adaptable and can work out solutions to being a bit chilly, wear more clothes.

I think though, there are two sides to a shortage, price goes up and the wealthier folk can pay it, but it shouldn't just be down to that, should be need (Elderly, young kids) but should be down to also taking a fair share of whats available.

Nobody should be heating a private swimming pool for example if there is a shortage of gas and electricity.

But ultimately it all boils down to money. Rich people such as Leonardo DiCaprio who flew in by private jet to lecture people on climate change do not want any reduction in the standard of their living. They want the poor people to give up their cars, heating and international travel while they still keep their multiple mansions, private yachts, SUVs, private jets and heated swimming pools.

The only thing that is going to make people get rid of their cars and turn off their heating is when they can literally no longer afford it.

The rich will do nothing.

That's not a reason to do nothing also.

Another thing I have whinged about in these forums is the amount of businesses, especially shops, who leave their lights blazing when no one is around, neon signs and pointless traffic lights on all night.

Not sure it would show anyone anything and would result in more gas being burnt in power stations as people put electric fires on. Russia wouldn't care in a tiny reduction in use for a few hours.

The banging pots was about giving people something to do.

They need weapons not platitudes.

I don't think giving up the logs for my stove, sourced from 5 miles away, is going to help Ukraine.
No gas, other than bottled gas, up here on Mull anyway.

What an utterly pointless exercise, but go ahead if you feel like you're doing something. Maybe better to donate something to these Ukraine support networks though?

I am sat reading this with two pullovers and a wooly hat on, as our central heating packed up on Saturday, whilst awaiting the arrival of a plumber.

I have done my bit.
