Biden labels Putin a war criminal.
Discussion
Not sure this is worthy of it's own thread and if it doesn't run, it doesn't run..
But when the US and Russia are so divided, how significant is a standalone comment like this?
Could this escalate into something more?

I would say that it is fairly significant, as it is something that Putin can latch onto as an act of aggression from Biden. I doubt it will lead anywhere as a standalone statement, but it is what it is followed up with that matters more.

I'm not sure why you took the time to post this? Sometimes it is better not saying anything at all.

One head of state accusing another head of state of being a war criminal. You can't row back from that.
American hypocrisy is strong on the subject of war crimes: they made it legal to invade Holland if any yanks are tried at the Hague.

Also note just how many violations of the Geneva Convention have been perpetrated by the US in recent history, from televising the death of Saddam Hussein to refusing red cross access at Guantanamo Bay, shackling PoWs, torturing PoWs, not allowing PoWs to wear their uniforms, refusal to allow food parcels to PoWs, etc.
Their illegal invasion of Pakistan & murder of Pakistani citizens plus lobbing the odd missile into the country tends to undermine their moral high ground, especially in light of Pakistan's rescue of the yank forces at Mogadishu.

I think seventy five years of coups, assasinations and wars, firmly puts the US on the top step of the podium for evermore, where war crimes are concerned. Well done for linking the Hague Invasion Act, there are still many people who do not realise about this US get out of jail free cards.https://www.hrw.org/news/2002/08/03/us-hague-invas...

Trump pardoned war criminals.

I dont think anyone is denying that Putin is a war criminal …
Unfortunately plenty of other leaders including our own leaders who have blood on their hands too but there seems to be historical amnesia..
Seemed a notable moment (to me anyway) for Putin to be labelled like this by Biden. It’s definitely a term which carries implications beyond the usual criticism of foreign leaders or policy. Although he’s possibly right, I’m not sure ramping up the rhetoric like this is right at the moment. History has shown that the solution is to give the Russians and Putin a face saving exit from the Ukraine rather than cornering them and accusing Putin of war crimes which likely makes the deescalation and future peace process much harder.
Obviously if Biden thinks this might help Putin get overthrown then that’s the way to go though.
The Russians have been, I believe, pretending to make progress in peace talks so that hopeful headlines of a ceasefire take the gaze away from their continued shelling of cities and deliberate targeting of civilians. Biden's comments pulled back media focus on Russian atrocities. It's all a media game.

The logic of that is clear in terms of media management in the west, however, taking advice to say something which people in the free world know already but which could backfire - when a certain type of personality is on the receiving end - makes it unhelpful in my view.
