If only I could pin down the differences between the Ukraine and Middle Eastern and African refuges? /sarcasmInteresting that the imagery portrayed in the press is markedly different. The scenes of refugees fleeing recent middle-eastern conflicts were mainly of young-ish, fit men, whereas the images of the Ukrainian refugees seem mainly to be women and children as the men stay behind to fight.
Now, I am as cynical as the next man when it comes to the reporting of events in the media, but it would be interesting to know if the statistics back up these images. It would certainly go some way to explaining the differing levels of support and sympathy for those displaced people.
Or it could just be as simple as that they look like 'us' (or rather, they look less like the ones which try to blow us up) so it is easier for some to be empathetic.

This has been the topic of discussion in our warehouse this morning and the consensus seems to be that the Ukrainians are better than the "other lot" because its not their fault. They had a society that was largely peaceful, didn't fall out with each other for religious reasons and don't seem so prone to having wars/civil wars/religious differences or having ultra religious leader that oppress others. Its perception. plain and simple. Help yourself and you get helped.
I'm not comfortable with that as it goes, all life being equal and all that.

The economic refugee comment is a good observation.

Because men are being forced to stay and fight…Now, I am as cynical as the next man when it comes to the reporting of events in the media, but it would be interesting to know if the statistics back up these images. What we have then is a nice mix of racism, xenophobia and sexism.
