Apparently, it was meant to be a "souvenir":

I mean, I thought I'd seen it all, but apparently some people are beyond stupid....

Got the queues moving, they should try it at Manchester airport.

Of all the airports in the world to try that stunt, they decided on Ben Gurion as well. I'm amazed whoever was carrying it wasn't shot through the head as soon as the security guards saw what was coming out of the bag - which might have also raised the IQ of whoever was carrying it by several points in the process.

I've been through Ben Gurion airport many times. Security set-up is extremely impressive, with several concentric rings to get through before even getting to check in.
I'm astonished the muppets got right into the security screening area before being apprehended.
Whoever was in charge at the time will almost certainly get fired & perhaps locked up.
Bloody daft thing to bring on a plane.....

I hadn't flown for 20 years, and took my Spicebomb aftershave in my hand luggage. I was then asked why there was a hand grenade in my bag while it went through the scanner.

Because grenades were OK to fly with 20 years ago?

I'm amazed he wasn't arrested, along with his family?

From the report they were allowed to board the aircraft and return to USA, albeit without the souvenir!

Didn't realise BG Airport was so relaxed these days...

I've been to Ben Gurion airport a few times, I'm amazed the device made it as far as it did before it was discovered. No doubt, someone will get the bking of a lifetime for this.

I took one of those home as a lad, about the same size. I'd found it on Ashdown Forest. Impressed my parents were not.

The police were called and I never saw it again.

Ben Gurion always feels super safe, at least once inside.

No, because I'm not used to thinking about what I shouldn't have in my bag.

Same with El Al, they all know about terrorism.

From the article

“ Within a few minutes the risk of a terror attack was dismissed and boarding resumed.

The family boarded their flight home as normal, but had to leave the shell behind”

No nonsense from the Israelis. hehe

Funniest thing I’ve seen in an airport security was a Glasgow airport security employee ask an armed policemen to put his gun through the X-ray machine.

At an unnamed airport in the UK, I used to get called if there was anything suspicious showing up in X-Ray. There's no exaggeration in these anecdotes.

An arms dealer had a missile, without explosives or fuel it turned out, but with a seemingly endless length of curled cord attached. The bay was cleared, the place deathly silent as I walked in. I'm not one for atmospheres, but it was scary. The dealer and his assistant were removed from the plane and brought to the shed. He was obnoxious, odious and ticked all the boxes for evil arms dealer caricature.

Another time I was asked to look at 6 Mills-type hand-grenades in hold luggage. They appeared different to the lighters that often showed up. The case was opened and it was discovered they were real and live. Cut a long story, they had been misdirected from an internal connection in Miami (I seem to remember), and put on a flight to the UK. Lots of implications with that of course. The terminal manager phoned the owner. He was miffed and told us to return them as soon as possible. Completely unfazed - unlike me. It was a report to the US police, FBI I think, but I wasn't asked for a statement so I don't know if it went any further.

Who needs 6 Mills bombs?

Anyone know what I've got here? I've had it at least 20 years and my dad had it for a while before that......

Not exactly sure what that shell is, but I would seriously consider getting it deactivated. NOT a DIY job, although I suppose you could give it a go with an angle grinder & a large hammer.....

Looks like a tape measure to me. Not particularly valuable, but occasionally useful.

Unfortunately a common occurrence in Vietnam are people cutting up unexploded bombs for scrap. Normally done at a residential address with horrific consequences as in below link :

I haven't been abroad since 2002. No reason in particular, only that we didn't have holidays when I was a kid, so it's not something that ever comes to mind. The time I mentioned in my post earlier, regarding the hand grenade, I was flying to Heathrow to see a band at Wembley.
