They've been circling the drain for years. I was a shop manager in Edinburgh about 20 years ago and they were struggling then.

Morrisons have just said they'll help them.

I'm not suprised they are struggling, i went in one the other day whilst out and about and quite simply they were ridiculously expensive.

A standard 500ml bottle of diet coke was £1.90 and even their cheapest bottle of water was over £1

Went into our former McColls which since I last visited has become a Morrisons local. McColls have looked like a shop on the edge for a while now. It will be interesting to see what Morrisons do with them as at the moment it is just a bit more stock and a few green Morrisons signs so far.

Seems like a good move for Morrisons to easily get into the high street supermarket game.

I suspect Morrisons will cherry pick the stores they want and sell off the rest.

The McColls near me (which I used to work in when I was as school decades ago) has always felt 'grubby' and I always wondered how it actually made any money to cover its costs.

There used to be a Subway concession in it but thats long gone so about 1/3 of shop has the empty subway stuff in it and a massive amazon locker. The rest is greeting cards, magazines, sweets plus a few shelves of very overpriced groceries. Its rare that I actually see anyone in there these days so its no surprise that they are in trouble.

One of my local McColl's became a Morrisons just recently.

Not surprised.

I was the store manager of one of their most profitable convenience stores. Despite reducing shrink tenfold, growing sales over several categories, and generally hitting all of my KPIs, nothing was ever good enough.

Area managers were bullies as was the regional director... Funnily enough I had a great rapport with the stores director who genuinely did appreciate what managers put themselves through.

A tin pot retailer that should be put out to pasture.

The Morrisons makeovers are simply a bit of badge engineering. The stores are still presently operated by McColls.

Aye, sounds familiar. long days, routinely working way over contract for not great money and no matter what you did your area manager would piss and moan every time they came in. The staff turnover rate was crazy high amongst supervisor and management staff.

I actually took a lower position elsewhere to get out.

Yes, I walked out in the end having worked a 100 hour week.

Funnily enough I wouldn't have ended up with my current career if I had worked my notice, as I would have missed the job advert.

I now have a super job with much more job satisfaction, much better salary & feel appreciated!

All their shops seem to be in good locations, just selling the wrong stuff..

It will be a real blow for many if they went as they seem to tie-up with post office facilities (not sure how extensively), surely this is a great value way of Morrisons getting into a ton of new locations to compete with other brands. They just need the right products..

The one closest to me is directly opposite a Sainsbury's Local, I don't understand why anyone would buy anything from there. The only reason I have ever set foot in the shop is because of the post office on the rare occasion I have needed to post something.

Way too many better and cheaper options available.

Why would they do that when they already tried it once with M Local and bailed out at vast expense because there wasn't any money in it? Unless of course no one is left who remembers?

They're the only supermarket chain I know that's already spent money on nice new stores that they've then bailed on and left empty, so a new expansion into something that's already failing isn't really something I can see happening.

The one nearest me was literally next door - as in attached - to a Tesco. It is now empty and boarded up.

But the prices were insane, and the staff were, shall we say, challenging to deal with.

They key is in the stores locations... didn't Morrisons take on a load of old blockbuster stores?

McColls genuinely have some good locations, and their morrisons conversions have been proven to be profitable.

They've had a weak CEO & general leadership. Morrisons already supply McColls and they've successfully got McColls to fund putting their branding on a load of stores.

My OH is a manager at a Post Office inside a McColls, was taken over from coop a few years back.

It's a bit scary, hoping she doesn't end up out of a job, she's the only post office in that town and the second busiest in the area. On a positive, if her store is in for being closed, apparently the ones with post offices have a longer shut down period due to the agreement with Post Office.

McColls are a crap company, absolutely shockingly run but I do hope they get something arranged, even with morrisons as there is some in locations here that are super helpful and truly part of the communities.

So many of the McColls are just plain grubby and dirty.

They seem to be a free local tuck shop for the local tea leaves.
