Presumably because it avoids ambiguity about the suspect being ethnically from anywhere else? Specifically, it rules out Islamic terror, which with the Paris trial ending just last week, must still be on people's mind.
From what I can read, Norwegians do quite a lot of hunting, and can own semi automatic weapons with a hunting or shooting license.
So I assume (not having fired either) that a military "style" gun like the ar15 would make no particular difference than a hunting style rifle if it was semi automatic (that's the if of course)
No one knows. One thing he wasn't was locked in a classroom full of kids, thank god.
I haven't looked at relative populations and deaths from guns, but the scale of gun violence in Europe still doesn't seem to be anywhere near the USA's.
Still awful for all those affected though.

A thought on the whole AR/hunting rifle thing is that even although some hunting rifles are semi automatic they are not going to have anything like the magazine capacity or the multiples of re-loadable magazines a military rifle would have. That being the case the posters saying his use of a hunting rifle rather than an AR may have kept the casualty level lower may well have a point.
Another observation is that this is a pretty rare event in Europe. A big difference between the US and Europe is if two or three of these attacks were to occur in Denmark you can guarantee the govt would deal with it through legislation that would curtail access to guns. You can also be pretty sure the general population would support said action.
This is the big difference between Europe and the USA. Both have the odd nutter who is prepared to go off on a shooting spree. The USA, sadly, also has a second lot of nutters who will ensure nothing will ever be done about their problem.
