Suspect arrested. Looking at the video footage looks to be a massive failure by the security team.
From reports sounds like the shooter used some sort of home made shotgun and Abe is in grave condition.

Very sad news and quite unbelievable, a shooting in Japan. Gun crime almost unheard of and the getting of a firearm, far from easy...

Horrific. Apparently a home made gun?

Seeing the pictures of the gun, very obviously home made or at least a very heavily modified one.

The perp apparently being ex-military is a bit interesting, Abe was in favour for Japanese militarisation.

I saw the breaking news on BBC this morning that he had been shot - then on Twitter saw the shooting and knew it was bad. Very sad indeed as he seemed like a genuinely decent bloke.

terrible - i think Japan had something like 1 fatal shooting in a year, so its pretty rare for guns to be involved in anything...

Looks like some pipe (presumably the right size to hold a shotgun shell), duck taped to a plank of wood, some sort of firing mechanism. That looks like it’s almost as dangerous to the user.

Not a surprise that he didn't make it looking at the footage. RIP

I am shocked something like this can happen in Japan you expect it in other places but I guess there are nutters everywhere !

It's the same with most politicians - the outside world sees the bigger picture
Internally local tittle tattle can be more dominant especially for those with strong views

Yes, weapon looked home made, it is near impossible to get a firearm licence in Japan, and if you do, even harder to get ammo.

Maybe he had some ammo from his military time and built a weapon to fire it?
