Two Police Officers Stabbed near Leicester Square
Discussion
Leicester Square and apparently not terror related.
Two police officers stabbed near Leicester Square in central London
Some mention on Twitter that it might have been related to a man robbing a shop.
Hopefully the officers make a full recovery.

Yeah, BBC are reporting that a security guard had heard that a shop was being robbed, and the officers responded. Two police officers stabbed near Leicester Square in central London

If true, it really does question either the intelligence, or the sanity of the guy. The amount of Police in that area in normal times is high. This week though? Almost smacks of a death by police wish...

Probably thought Plod would be at the funeral areas, forgetting that every officer who can be spared has already been sent to London on mutual aid. Personally I haven't seen as many officers & tube staff as I have this week since 2010. What it's going to be like in county towns and cities this weekend I shudder to think. Well thats kinda my point. Trafalger Square would be 30-60 seconds away for Armed Response that would be on duty for the Funeral. FiF said:
Never ever thought I would be so happy to see a bloke approaching wielding a bicycle as an impromptu weapon.
He's very brave.Quite patient and deploys the bike with devastating effect. All the time his arms are in the air he is exposing himself to deadly injury.
Perp is lucky no armed cop there. I can't see anyone sensible arguing against lethal force in that situation.

Glad somebody else said that. My earlier post was originally much longer and far more ranty on that very subject but decided for sake of sanity to delete that part.
king posts. The video on Twitter also illustrates what a difficult job the police have; if they'd tasered or used a baton on the bloke when he was first on the ground they'd have risked an accusation of being over zealous but by letting him get up to arrest him two officers ended-up seriously injured and it could have been even worse. Personally I'd always support the police adopting a safety first approach for themselves over the criminal but they've a fine line to tread as it seems there are always plenty of people around who are keen to test whether they've gone too far....

It's perhaps just a sad reflection on our society that police officers being stabbed in the line of duty is no longer a shock, at least when it happens in a big city like London.

Videos like this should be circulated more widely IMO. There are lots of armchair warriors or people who read about events in the news and form a view of how they’d react/handle things differently. In a video like this you see the speed at which something that looks to be in control, gets wildly out of control. Zero to hyper violent in less than a second. Terrifying really.
Hope all recovery quickly.
Goes to show how difficult it is to restrain someone who doesn’t want to be restrained when the cops themselves are restricted in how they are allowed to behave, by having to try to only use Home Office approved tactics etc.
Also proves just how useless batons are against someone determined to keep fighting.
Anyone who ever moans about why it takes ‘x’ number of cops to restrain someone clearly doesn’t understand the restrictions the cops themselves are under, and the level of scrutiny they face after the incident.
Nice little foot stamp that some guy did on the guys legs at the end

So many conflicting emotions between this and the incident last week which has gained much greater traction. We really are damned if we do and damned if we don’t.
I see the mayor calling for officers to be properly equipped to safely do their job (whilst somehow managing to stick the boot into the Met in the very same breath), and yet very recently, an officer properly equipped to do his job safely, and using said equipment is thrown under the bus. At least he’s under a political bus rather than a literal car. Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six, so the saying goes.
I think a vast majority want to see a properly equipped and robust police force that can deal with the firearm carrying drug gangs and the violent knife wielding criminals that plague our society, but when it comes to seeing what it actually looks like when dealing with a violent suspect are horrified by the reality of the situation and suddenly cry “police brutality” and “excessive force”.
I’m sure many of these are the same people who have never been confronted with a violent criminal and been in genuine fear they might not make it home today to see their family…
I hope the video that is currently circulating of the London incident (and the hero with the pedal cycle) will do some good and open the eyes of some as to what sometimes has to be done.
Above all, wishing especially those officers injured, and to those who were involved in this job, including the no doubt devastated radio op(s) a speedy recovery, both physical and mentally.

(I’ve not seen any video nor feel any compulsion to search for it).
The incident sounds horrific. I hope the officers recover fully and swiftly and receive the care they need so they can and want to return to duties. I imagine the mental affects of these sorts of things can be suffered long after the event. At least these days the psychological scars are more openly considered.
Wrt why has this topic not gained more traction I don’t doubt that the bizarre (but expected) focus being given to the Queen’s death in the legacy media and across social media is a significant factor. The tv channels have almost exclusively run only one story for 8 days now. Pretty much all from the same supportive angle. I think they’re mistaken in doing so but there you go.

king posts. I know its usual for PH armchair experts to comment on stuff like this without any facts or knowledge, but for once they seem to be occupied elsewhere.

My day one chat with new student officers covers three areas, one of them is do not be afraid to use force if you feel you need to. I explain that I do not expect my team to go around using force when it’s not necessary but when it is I expect them to hit hard and not mess about and as long as they do it for the right reasons I will always back them. I explain that messing about as far as force goes is likely to result in them getting injured and that one strike on YouTube looks far better than multiple strikes because you didn’t hit hard enough in the first place.
