Weird strike logic by the rails unions

We will strike for 2.5 days starting from 18.00hrs 24 Dec

This means there will not be any trains on Xmas Day and Boxing Day as there has been for the last several years. So no change then, YET the press are going ape about people not getting home or elsewhere for the Holidays.
Previously the network stared to close down from about 21.00 so there isnt much difference..Or am i missing something?

Strike at 1800h means trains and staff will need to be suitably parked up and in depots long before that. And similarly, trains will not be in the right locations for the days after either.

It's the same in all strikes to date, with reduced services the days before and after because of this.

Christmas engineering works.
Planned years in advance, tens or hundreds of millions of pounds worth of cranes etc hired, completely fked if, for example, ballast trains can’t get to or from the sites over the holidays. Christmas 2023 is probably already planned so the next opportunity for a lot of this work will be Christmas 2024 or 2025, either that or lots of disruption over several weekends or an Easter holiday.

Yep, affecting engineering works of which there is a LOT over Chrimbo.

Looking at the Nationalrail link below during that time they anticipate undertaking essential engineering and railway improvement work. I assume they need drivers to assist in this work. I assume those works will then have to be undertaken on a regular day, upsetting train timetables, closures etc

So… striking in a way that impacts the company as much as possible whilst impacting the public as little as possible? Isn’t this what people have been saying they should do?

Surely the work's got to be done either way, now it will just be done at another date so it will impact passengers then instead?
