It's not the new BBC clock. They are celebrating the start of Breakfast TV and going all retro.

So nothing to do with a "certain flag".

I think the OP is in 1984 rather than 1983 smile

The BBC clock looked dated in 1983 - how we laughed as we played The Yellow Rose of Texas on our digital watches

OP, are you one of those who watches the BBC specifically so you can get mad at them about something?

Sadly she won't be back, nor will she have anything to do with this 40 year reunion!

I had that watch, or at least, my brother and I had it. We were supposed to share it, when it was my turn to take it to school, I got to morning break before my brother took it from me. And I never wore it again. Sigh!

Lol, I wasn’t born in 83 so didn’t appreciate the cultural reference! I only put it on for 5 mins whilst having a cuppa before setting off to work.

To tell time on an analog clock, you look at where the hands are pointing. The short or small hand tells you the hour, the long or big hand tells you the minute of the current hour, and the thinnest hand indicates the seconds of the current minute.

Funny, it looks exactly as it does in my memory - down to the yellowish back light on one side. Imagine 15 of those going off in Maths class on a Monday morning!
