Starbucks has sacked an employee after video emerged of them accusing a customer of being transphobic for failing to use their preferred pronouns

There is a video clip of the altercation in question in the link provided.

It does question what was said by the customer to provoke such an angry response, but surely the response itself to both the customer and the person filming it is somewhat excessive?

Certainly, when addressing a person serving me in a supermarket / restaurant / other establishment, it's limited to, 'May I have xyz' followed by, 'Many thanks' or , 'Cheers, thanks'.

As with dashcam vids, there may be more background to this than meets the eye.

"before the employee storms over and knocks his phone out of his hand."

Regardless of what was said, I'd fire them for that.

On balance of probabilities, it's more probable than not that the altercation did start with the woman saying something transphobic to the employee.

'I'm not a transphobe, but....' vibes. Basic respect for other human beings is not hard.

The employee handled the situation very poorly; especially in leaving the store to grab the phone.

The problem is it is very hard not to upset someone given our woke society. I very much doubt that the lady deliberately said something to inflame the situation, and any person that is face to face in a customer service role, needs to accept there will be times when they don't agree..

After all "the customer is always right" as was taught 30 years ago.

I guess "cheers" is ok, but "cheers mate" is a no-no.
Assaulting the guy with the phone if well out of order though.

Begs the question, would you actually call someone by their promoun? "Hello she/her can I have a coffee?"

No, it's really easy. Don't act like a dick and you won't upset someone.

We never had these problems 30 years ago because people understood people and would be tolerant. It's called customer service. I guess that bit fell on deaf ears for you.

I'd say the opposite. Sadly the opposite side of 'woke' is intolerance to people who are different.

Think back 50-60 years, I'm sure there were plenty of times someone upset someone for say.. a negative comment about the colour of their skin.

Regardless, losing their st and grabbing the phone is the issue.

It's absolutely true, because I read it in the Daily Mail.

I think this whole situation is a mess and that person deserved to be fired… but there is no way the UK was more tolerant 30 years ago.

'Being a dick' includes an old biddy calling someone in a secret superposition state 'lady' allegedly. Be careful not to upset any hysterics within earshot with that nasty old, far-right 'lady' dick-talk now people, it's how Hitler/ TRUMP/ Genghis Khan started.

Hahaha - just saw this - "Women's-rights activist Kellie-Jay Keen also shared the clip and tweeted: "Which branch is this? We should all go."" Yes, great idea, take your 12000 Twitter loons and get them all a Frappuccino, that'll help. Who grew all these lunatics?

Taken at face value you can't speak to customers like that and you can't start trying to take peoples phones off them.

The sad part for me is that I imagine this kind of thing happens every day in retail and this is only a story because of the trans angle.

It's a very odd fascination by some people and the media.

Yup.... and in most cases it will be the employees taking the abuse; having to suck it up and management/the company looking the other way.

Worked in low paid customer facing roles in the past and can very much believe someone deliberately said something to inflame the situation.

But the video only captures the employee’s very ill judged response.
