To be fair, that sounds exactly like a secret tunnel under New York.

I don't understand what it was for. A synagogue isn't (usually) a high security building, they could just go in through the front door same as everyone else.

Secret Tunnels Built by Jews under New York might be more accurate. Not sure a tunnel can be Jewish. Even if it has a bit missing at the end.

Allegedly NYC public's works investigated multiple water pipes etc that had been damaged, and during their works they discovered the tunnels but assumed they were just voids.

When they started getting ready to pump concrete it to stabilise, the 'tunnelers' were discovered and that's when the police were called.

Anyone who thinks you can just dig tunnels under a city area with layered utilities etc has a screw loose! Whole thing is very bizarre.
