Jeremy Clarkson health scare

Reported in paper, suspected close to having heart attack, usual symptoms.

Has had stent into heart and hopefully on the mend.

Speedy recovery Jeremy, still miss your politically incorrect TG programme but watch it still on catch-up way more interesting than some of the motoring dross on just now

I did assume he'd be whisked off for some private hospital. I guess the NHS is still pretty good at that sort of emergency care.

He's a nailed on candidate for a heart attack though, drinks, smokes, overweight, never does any exercise.

This, he is 64, he looks about ten years older. Being that wealthy must be incredible, it amazes me that people in this position don't look after themselves more so they can enjoy it for longer.

He will be dead before he is 70 at this rate.

The JR's Cardiac Unit is very good indeed, you're best being in there, even if the food's not quite private sector

It is a bit hard to understand why he didn't look after himself better. He has it all, money, land, family and fame, a fit girlfriend and everything he touches seems to turn to gold, all this as well as the fact that he seems to still very much enjoy life and has the appetite for new challenges.

Maybe now he will let Lisa make him eat whatever she does and give up the fags. Let's hope so.

That's one perspective. The other is that being very wealthy removes any barriers that might otherwise have hindered access to an excessively indulgent lifestyle.

One of my favourite (top 10 at least) top gear episodes was the car / motorhome trip to Devon.

Clarkson in his grand designs style Citroen CX, and they had to put on wetsuits.

Anyway, even back then his gut was huge, and was rightly called fat by Hammond.

That must have been 15-20 years ago.

I haven't seen anyone slagging him off in this thread so far but it's just a fact - he has treated his body pretty badly and he is now paying the price.


I've seen previously overweight people lose loads after a health scare, so hie might pull it round.

But I've also seen people have mini strokes etc refusing to change, with the NHS spending increasingly more on them each year to try and undo the damage.

Clarkson obviously enjoys life, but will a life of merge diet and exercise be a life he wants? It will certainly be a shock to him, as to some extent his exuberance and bloody-mindedness has defined him during his career.

If I had to sum up so many of the "I won't let the state tell me what to do" attitudes on here in one word every time some initiative to improve lifestyles or health comes up I could probably just say "Clarkson".

Unfortunately for him this shows it's probably not too sensible to take that view when it comes to drinking and smoking and eating and exercising and it's caught up with him.

Nothing but best wishes to him for his health and hopefully if there's anything good come out of this it's that he got lucky and it's wake-up call that it can hopefully be turned around

Agreed on the best wishes, but how is "I won't let the state tell me what to do" relevant to Clarkson's health? There are people of his body shape and lifestyle who don't get a heart attack, ever. There are skinny and active celery munchers who do. We don't know which of those Clarkson's case is, though of course we can guess.

Neither the NHS nor any group of medics are the state, and the state doesn't listen to the NHS either. The state is a faceless name some prefer for a collection of mostly incompetent and mostly self-serving individuals who like to tell us to do what they say, not what they do. Ignoring them whenever possible is a good move. Medics, not so good.

Hopefully JC will continue to recover and then remain healthy for many years to come so he can irreverently pop plenty more balloons disguised as pompous asses.

I sympathise with him enormously and hope he makes a full recovery - the world needs people who say what they think and Clarkson certainly does that.

But I watched the last Grand Tour and thought

"Christ Clarkson, you need to start looking after yourself"

You simply can't live like that in when you're in your mid-60s and beyond.

Hopefully he'll take this as a wake-up call and start living a healthier lifestyle so he can keep saying what he thinks for many more years to come

Depending on how the procedure went, he may well feel better than ever after having the stents in.

So despite a close call, it was caught, so 'paying the price' for 20 years of living on the edge, may well end being a a single night in hospital. Then back at it with more energy

he who worries early worries too much. Some people live like a saint and still die of heart attacks whilst on a run.

(i have stents so know it's more complicated than that, but..... just as a counter point )

I have a family history of dementia on mum and dads side, I look after myself reasonably well, but I have absolutely no intention of living long enough put my family through what I’ve had to deal with..
I’ll eat and drink what I want..

I’m with you on this. My grandmother got to 99 and 11 months with the last decade in a bed not knowing who anyone was being fed mush. No thanks.

The possibility of being struck down with something doesn’t excuse treating your body appallingly, but it does highlight that life can be cruel so maybe the best thing you can do is live it your way and take what comes.

My grandmother’s favourite saying was ‘everything in moderation’. I think I’m closer to the Clarkson model. Life can be too short. Get well soon Jezza.

As far as you can feel sorry for a multi millionaire play boy who has spent his life horsing around in supercars, he has sort of boxed himself in with the laddish, grumpy old man image. It would be difficult to reinvent himself as a keen jogger.
