People live there though surely knowing that it's an earthquake zone hence some risk.

It’s only a matter of time until the next really big one hits from the Cascadian zone. When it does hit they expect nearly everything west of interstate 5 to be wiped out.

I would defo be worried for the next couple of weeks as these things tend to come with warnings first and 7.0 isnt exactly small just lucky that the area it was in is pretty much the boonies.

I dont live in the Bay Area, but I did see the warnings pop-up for me. More of a generic information thing rather than anything else.

Yes, earthquake did hit quite a bit north of the Bay and tsunami warnings issued. There are a number of plans in place across the counties and districts and they have been triggered. You will find areas in which there is likely to be an impact a number of signs and indicators to show where high ground is and where the risk areas are.

Not seeing anything about any impact yet, but no doubt something will happen soon.

Tsunami warning has been dropped - damage is from the earthquake. I didnt feel anything, but a city not far from me did. Its weird. Must be the surface rock that is around me.

I just had a look at Interstate 5 and the route it takes, that's an awful lot of land at risk!

If Cascadia goes for a full fault rip from Cape Mendocino (where this quake was) up to Vancouver then it will be a 9+ earthquake and Tsunami on the scale of Indonesia and 2011 Japan.

It's happened before many times and it will happen again one day. Where this appears to have happened is at the triple junction of the Juan de Fuca plate, Pacific Plate and North American plate, Which if any of the fault lines from there are further triggered could see the cascadia fault go or the San Andreas. Hopefully its done its thing and will go back to sleep now.

I wondered where the plates where so thanks...I assumed this was the San Andreas Line

I suspect the (British) media will have to shuffle away disappointed.

My lovely old aunt, currently a SF resident, had her shower rudely interrupted by the quake only to the extent that I disturbed her by calling to check she was ok.
