Income tax has been around since about 1800 and 100 years ago the UK was quite deep in debt from WW1.

It's evidently American in origin, which helps to explain why it's bks. Perpetuated by indiscriminate copying and pasting.

100 years ago it was such a great time. No NHS so if you got ill - so tough st unless you were rich enough to pay for a doctor.

Unemployed? Workhouse, emigration or starvation. Great choices.

You sound like a good friend who moans about taxes…despite earning more than half a million and having assets over £10 million. None of it inherited. So people saying you can’t get insanely rich whilst being “heavily taxed” aren’t really being truthful.

Exactly. The cr*p about 100 years ago is ridiculous. When we had an empire and the UK was "wealthy" most people were living in sh*t conditions compared with now.

You do pay VAT in restaurants, but that's far from a 'cooking tax'.

Yep, from 2001 when she first got a Nokia, and hasn't realised she's used her entire quote of monthly SMS messages to send on this pile of steaming ste.

Some friends own part of the rectory in Ufton Nervet where income tax was dreamed up by Dr. Henry Beke before it was introduced in 1799. It's a very nice house, fond memories of some excellent parties, probably in the same rooms where Dr. Beke was making his plans.

I mean it's a poem not an analysis from the IFS
