Misogynists targeting girls on suicide forums
Discussion
Couple of stories jumped out this week.
This one.
Horrifying rape and incest video game tells players to be 'women's worst nightmare' and 'never take no for an answer' - as furious users call for it to be banned
As in what the actual f

And today this one.
Misogynistic content driving UK boys to hunt vulnerable girls on suicide forums
We've got the various Tate threads on here where some weirdos seem to look up to that type of toxicity and in my time here's there's always been a small but steady cohort who have had some pretty grubby views about women.
I get it we've always had misogyny and there have always been wronguns but I'm struggling to think of a time when I was reading headlines like those.
I can't see it being as simple as social media but I'm also struggling to think of a more significant contributor than social media as the "earworm".
What the hell is going on?

Jukes said the internet had “turbocharged” material triggering resentment among some young men: “In com networks and in terrorist networks, the idea that the interests of men and boys have been relegated, and the interests of women have been elevated, leads directly to violent misogyny.”
Perhaps the solution is to not side line the interests of men and boys.
Perhaps the solution is to not side line the interests of men and boys.

This is blatant b

Who's sidelining the interests of boys and men? What is it that boys/men need that they can't get?
You seem to be confusing equalising rights for women and girls as somehow a negative for boys and men?
There's no part of society more victimised than men /sarcasm

Where is the campaign on violence against men and boys?

What proportion of knife crime victims are male?

Isn't that a different set of issues though? What proportion of knife crime victims are male?
There are clearly issues there that need tackling but they aren't as gender driven.
As in we don't see many boys or men being stabbed or killed just because they're boys or men and I'll bet there isn't going to be a "rape and dominate men" game any time soon.
There are so many negative narratives about social disfunction at the moment, as well as content that seems determined to turn men and women into some bizarrely adversarial state, that I wonder if some are just normalising it now.
We know that most men and women are not divided, most grow out of that in childhood, but to keep reading how terrible everything is now for boys and men, as well as how every girl and woman is now a victim, must feed into the social anxiety.
We can be clear that there are real problems that needs tackling, including misogyny as well as purposeless for young men, but does the reporting of this normalise the division and increase it? It would be good if we could read more about positive role models rather than be exposed to harmful ones, but I guess that doesn't sell.
In years to come, I suspect we will look back in this era as a very strange time of negativity, self loathing and gloom in all things. I just hope that I am around long enough experience a resurgence of optimism and prosperity.

Not really.
The head of counter terrorism felt that the perception of young men and boys that they are deemed inferior to women and girls is a contributing factor for how young men and boys are currently treating women and girl. The young men and boys clearly don't see high profile campaigns aimed at them they way they see them aimed at women and girls. This is likely causing resentment.
There are other factors too. Men are treated more harshly by the courts than women. More of the NHS budget is spend on women than men. Men are treated appallingly in the divorce courts and with child contact.
It is no surprise to me that young men and boys are becoming disillusioned and feel side lined.

Who would have thought…. This would go the same way as the Brand thread.
Entirely as intended, you mean? Really I should lobby the Guardian to open up comments sections for more articles to make life easier for some.Fwiw the first of those links doesn’t work for me, Stewie. Don’t fix it solely on my account but fyi.

No mens interests have been sidelined. Womens interests have just been given slightly more resource. A rising tide raises all ships comes to mind...
My N,P&E Bingo card is filling up nicely.
We've already had the conspiracist who knows 'the truth' and other insinuations along the line of poor, misunderstood males and some wonderful whataboutism.
I'm got my pen posed over 'white knight' now.
The fact it's a horrendous story seems to fly straight over the heads of some in the desperation to handwave away facts.

Yes, that's true. The sort of people who used to sit on the top deck of the bus gibbering, or would corner you in the newsagents given half a chance, or would unexpectedly air their repellent views at work whilst others had a civilised discussion now have a voice thanks to the tinterweb.TX.
I would suggest that, if we take a step back from the usual 'start fishing thread-get bites-be mock outraged at resulting fish' merry go round, the salient point is that a bunch of middle aged blokes on a motoring forum are not going to be able to say why teen boys feel drawn to misogynistic knobheads like Tate.
There really needs to be a drains-up discussion with young men about why they feel this way rather than talking heads trying to utilise professional guesswork.
I have young lads (11) and I am doing my utmost to raise them properly with good attitudes towards women and dispel the whole pink job/blue job thing. But some of their classmates already have worrying attitudes to girls from the group Whatsapp chats I've seen.
Stewie has a valid point in the OP that social media has a large part to play here. It amplifies poor attitudes and gives them a world stage that they never would have had 20 years ago. But I don't know how we fully solve that issue, I'm not sure there's any going back.
As an aside Steam has long needed a clean up, there's some really dodgy games on there.
