We should have a policy that all decisions are made within 12 months so people can stay or leave.

I must admit that I, and others, have probably adopted a somewhat tougher approach to all this over the many years.
Immigration is not the key issue, just illegal immigration - if someone has entered the country illegally they should be deported within days.

Imigration may not be an issue for you & many others , but mass immigration / freedom of movement etc is for a lot of people including me as it supresses/ suppressed our wages .

You obviously do not work in an industry that has been blighted by migration or you actually are an employer or customer who benefits from cheap labour.
