Pistonheads now defines our country
Discussion
I may leave Pistonheads (cue posts from the many trolls saying "good riddance" or "you don't need to announce it"), or perhaps limit myself to the less toxic areas of discussion, car specific stuff, perhaps. It appears more and more that many members are completely incapable of putting across an alternative argument with an opinion with which they disagree. It's straight out of the traps with personal insults.
If many on here discussed things in the pub in the same way as they do on this forum, they'd probably end up in casualty.
It occurs to me that this is exactly where we are in the country as a whole. Rabid tribalism, a complete inability to understand that someone might have a different opinion and to posit a counter argument rationally. We're becoming toxic and it's depressing.

No we are not. Idiot. If many on here discussed things in the pub in the same way as they do on this forum, they'd probably end up in casualty.

Even during the Referendum there were shouty arguments in the pub and at work, and rarely did they ever get to the pushing/shoving stage! But sure people were defriended on Facebook and such forms of social exclusion. That’s a very odd title? PH is by definition (largely) restricted to people interested in cars, although NP&E is a different matter, and presumably why there was a (wise) restriction put on time of membership and number of posts in other sub-forums.
Unfortunately, some people who qualify for NP&E now post exclusively in NP&E to the exclusion of all else, whether through ‘grandfather’ rights or ‘grifting’ to qualify.
I don’t mind debate, and as far as I’m aware I’ve never done anything that could be considered as anything other than a challenge to something I disagree with. So I’d encourage you to stay, even if I and others disagree with some things you might say. A society where people can’t debate disagreements is not a good society.
I post in lots of other sub forums as I’m sure you do. I’m not keen on people who restrict themselves solely to NP&E. ‘We’ are a very small proportion of society but tend to think we represent the whole of society (and I’ve been guilty of that myself).

Its always been the way, but we are now able to speak to the other tribes via this internet thing, and hide and lie behind our keyboards.
Pistonheads is an interesting one. I'm a lefty liberal eco nutter (in PH terms) and see PH as, on the whole, centre-right.
However, there are some knowledgeable people and only a small proportion of nutters / obvious trolls that generally get called out. Being a car forum some of the views on things like climate are far from unbias as a result, but most seem to be fairly sensible.

I'm becoming more convinced by the day that there are a significant and growing number of accounts on PH created solely for the purpose of pushing specific talking points or narratives of certain interest groups/organisations/parties. They're the ones that post vociferously on certain 'hot-topic' threads but pay passing lip service to posting on other threads (if at all). Whereas if you look at my posting history it's everywhere from Lego threads to Windows tech queries, YouTube vids, health-related stuff, fragrances as well as some current affairs and news etc etc. That's a 'normal' posting pattern imo.

....
Or it's more that people increasingly are only prepared to listen to 'their' own tribe (who are telling them what they already agree on) and therefore view any deviation from that view as something only possible from someone who clearly is a 'bad' person who needs to be roundly condemned for disagreeing. ....

PH has a huge membership. It's to be expected there will be agitators trying to cause unrest, it's part of modern warfare now.Edited by Funk on Monday 9th June 15:28
