How on earth did they get in? In my RAF days the perimeter fence would have been secure and the area patrolled by dog handlers.

Absolutely shocking. Heads should roll for this. Our premier airfield and they managed to gain entry, ride scooters and all undetected. I bet Putin is laughing his socks off at our high security installations.

The fence around Brize is not exactly prison secure style, and maybe it should be. Single row of concertina barbed wire, which with a thick house welcome mat is easily overcome and then put your ladder against it and lift another to the other side to aid your escape. Or just cut it......!

Maybe Brize will realise posting on social media recently parties they have for local VIP's to thank them for their support with RAF stewards waiting on them like from some bygone era, and concentrate on making sure the base was secure, then this may not have happened.

Maximum penalty for military sabotage is life imprisonment, hopefully they find them and make an example of them.

I don't think he's looking down on anyone's airfield security right now

If it's that easy to get it they're rather lucky it was only fire extinguishers loaded with paint. Could have been fair worse.

An RAF base obviously has a large perimeter but I would have assumed that if I broke into one I ran the risk of being shot. Obviously not.
With available levels of manning I wonder how practical a really secure perimeter is anyway?

It is a little odd as my initial reaction and I suspect many is WTF how could they break in an attack such things. However what would we do shoot some protectors to stop them. Reality there should have been security to apprehend them but would it have played well on the news or on social media if we had had soldiers fighting with protectors an what if it had become violent would it have been OK to shoot people etc.

It's sort of a no win but they should have been stopped before they got to the planes

I have a relative who is very senior personnel at Brize. This could be the first blot on what has been an impeccable career. Oops.

A nuclear power's main airforce based broken into and sabotaged by soyboys on electric scooter.

Sure, let's take it to Putin.

It's beyond embarrassing.

Many years ago I was an RAF Policeman. In those days the airfield would have been guarded by armed police dog handlers and intruders would have been found very quickly .

It’s very hard to guard the whole perimeter but there should be security around and inside the base. As I said earlier in my day there would have been armed RAF Police including dog handlers on patrol.

"RAF Police dogs on patrol", "CCTV in operation"

Clearly not.

It's a military base, what do you think the response to saboteurs should be? You're suggesting we can't do anything because it might look bad on the news? Why would robustly defending the nations security look bad on the news?

Although it's a moot point because apparently we don't defend them.

BBC article quoting MoD spokesperson said:
Our armed forces represent the very best of Britain. They put their lives on the line for us, and their display of duty, dedication and selfless personal sacrifice are an inspiration to us all.
"It is our responsibility to support those who defend us."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx24nppdx0lo

Surely it’s more “it’s our responsibility to employ some bloody sentries to stop this sort of thing”

If the gov wants more guards then it's upto No10 to pay for them.
