Householder gave chased after three motorcycles stolen. One thief killed in crash not involving householder. Extent of reckless driving seems to be doing 36 in a 20.

The court are also told he didn't aid the fallen rider and instead took his property home and didn't contact police until several hours later.

Both the driver of the stolen bike the deceased fell from and the householder charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Have to say I have some sympathy for him. Hopefully the jury will.

As an aside the thieves targeted him after an advertisement I. Facebook marketplace.

I must confess that I thought you were reporting a story of a posthumous charge.

“fk about” etc, I guess?

If he left a kid to die, that's not on.

He'd clearly got his bike. Stay with it and the thief, call the police and ambulance and wait until they get there.

No sympathy for the thieves if they wrap themselves around a tree solo. But if you're there, you don't walk off.

I feel some sympathy for him because I suppose nobody knows how they'll react until they're in that situation but I also don't think I can disagree with the prosecution either.

It is no defence, we will say to you, for Callum Duncan to plead that he was entitled to drive however he liked in an effort to recover his stolen property.

He still owed a duty to all the other road users around him, including those men on his bike.

The standard of driving to which he must be held to account does not change because of the circumstances he was in.

It's a shame all criminals aren't, by default, subjected to a "play stupid games, will stupid prizes" clause. Hopefully the jury will have an adequate quantitiy of brain cells between them.

Sounds like Telegraph looking for outraged clicks. Must be more to accusation of dangerous driving than a speed of 36mph.

Personally, I don't think the accused owed the thief anything and certainly not any sort of aid. If being a criminal weren't so safe and easy in the UK, perhaps fewer would choose it as their calling.

Yep.

Looks like the scrote found out.

Oh well.

You can't chase after/follow people who have stolen your property now. If you do and they are injured it will be your fault.

Is there any wonder I hear people every day now say "isn't this country fecked"

Is isnt though. What if he stayed but didnt know first aid, and his actions didnt help the scrot.. er.. victim but made them worse
Would he be to blame?

Better to retrieve his valuables and leave that sort of thing to the professionals
Call the police.

But he didn’t even do that until several hours had passed from reading it.

Didn’t help himself either did he.

As someone who has twice been the victim of car crime and twice caught and fought with the thieves, I have every sympathy for him, and less than none for dead criminals. I would never have met the bds that came to steal my stuff had they left me alone, and they only have themselves to blame if they end up getting battered.

It caused me significant and ongoing unpleasantness, especially the first time, when I was attacked with a hammer by one of two scumbags.

I ended up in hospital last year after I caught a guy trying the doors on my house and van. His teeth went through a vein in my hand while fighting with him. I had to have a Hepatitis shot, an AIDS test and several stitches. I fking hate thieves, there's no way I'm standing still and letting them get on with it. If circumstances dictated it, I'd do the same again tonight.

The police were less than admirable, especially last year. More interested in me hitting an already well known local offender who not only steals stuff, but has assaulted police and hospital staff, and been charged multiple times previously.

I've no objection to the police not doing anything, but I have every objection to them getting involved when I have to deal with it.

Unless the prosecution plan on charging the female driver whose car the scrotes collided with it seems presumptuous to charge Mr Duncan; why didn't she or Mr Norman call an ambulance? That said this article suggests that death was instant so what an ambulance would achieve isn't clear. The allegedly desperate and high risk licence-endangering speed-freakery of Mr Duncan and the chase, including abandoning one of the bikes and the deceased becoming a pillion, covered a distance of 300 yards, the prosecution seem to be reaching for something that probably isn't there.

He didn't call anyone for 4hrs.

I'm not suggesting he performs CPR or anything similar. Accident seen, call it in, wait.

The result of not doing so is he's now being charged. May well be a "leaving the scene of an accident" and "speeding" charge ultimately. But if he'd called it in and waited, I doubt it would even be that.

Sounds like the kid died instantly anyway. So the rider of the bike he was on should be charged with heavier offences, and his accomplice.

I wonder if there will be a go fund me for the victim. I recall the last time a similar event happened the guy was given enough to soften the Injustice.

You certainly drive off if the thief whose mate you are being blamed for killing is there

Not calling straight away.. made no difference. Residential street 6.30 am police would be alerted immediately.

4 hours? Head scrambled I’m sure. I’ll happily donate to his gofundme think I did with that other chap
